New to your forum/website, but am really excited to finally find a website for striper fishing!
Really looking for some advice; we are both rookies to striper fishing (chased salmon, steelhead, largemouth, smallmouth, shad, ......) but not stripers. Well, we went again the other night. Thought we were armed to the teeth with enough batteries, but were we ever wrong. Had to navigate back to the ramp using a small light. The river section we fished has tidal influence; we fished the (low) slack and incoming. All at night (started @ 8:00 pm thru 4:30 am). Lots of shad in the river. Tried your tech using float and bait but no takes. Tried trolling and casting to 'striper activity'. Kinda hard to tell @ night. Lots of creatures slap the water 'sides 'ol stripers..... And with the shad jumping. We did hear some multiple splashing (?). Hard to see fins or boils in water (no moon-light).
Coud we use spotlight with red lens (as we do hunting coyotes) to locate stripers? Or does any light spook 'um?
We kept noise and lights to a minimum. Should we keep all lights off (including running lights, or does it make a difference?). Can turn running lights on when another boat is in the area (no boats were out during our entire trip).
Also tried jigging in deeper water. The water depth averages about eight (8) feet, with 15-20' pockets in some areas. Really interested in basic movements in rivers- especially during the daylight hours (although prefer to fish @ night!). Gotta dumb theory maybe stripers will hunker down in the deeper holes during daylight and thought maybe jigging in areas where fish are showing on electronics would work. Maybe tip the jig with sandshrimp and/or use an anchovie above the jig? or float tech?
Am pretty 'tight lipped,' as most of the guys are in our neck of the woods in Oregon, but will catch some of THEM out one of these nights... and ...maybe... get some tips
