My Derby review....

All I can say was that I was fortunate enough to fish with both of these gentlemen during this derby. I fished a tide with Leo and crew, learned a few things about rigging rubba and introduced some of the guys to a couple of the more "private" north shore haunts. I know Leo and the guys all fished hard for the week they were here and it clearly paid off. The crew found some nice fish indeed! And, they hit the prime weather as well. It is not always that nice here. (like the last week). I was never really sure either of their fish would hold but once I saw the last weeks forecast, I knew their odds significanatly went up. Conditions were beyond difficult here the last week. In addition, this year, everything is also REALLY late. Leaves are still on the trees and are still GREEN! I remember past derbys driving to my boat in a sea of blowing orange leaves…not this year. My one friend said..."How can we expect to catch Striped Bass while we are cacthing Spanish and King Mackerels?!"

I also fished many days along-side or with Keith who made the extreme effort and stuck it out for the entire derby… all 35 days. I know his expense was significant especially considering the cost of marine fuel with some days burning some serious amounts, (not to mention lodging and all the other stuff) but it was a trip I am sure he will remember for quite some time! Just about every day I we spoke on the radio, and directed each other towards fish... and between us we covered some serious territory. From Nantucket, all of MV to Nomans to Cutty. We did a few night trips together and I know we each taught each other a few things that improved our fishing. When his significant other was on island for the week, my wife and me hooked up with them for a lovely up-scale Edgartown dinner that included a few cocktails and numerous fish stories. (I know it made the ladies happy and my wife said it was the most time she spent with me this derby!)

At the ceramony, both these gentlemen said some kind things about the derby volunteers, the sponsors, and some of the people they have met which I know mean a lot to the folks that put in a ton of time. Keith called last night and said that during his stay he really got to know a lot of the people in the event instead of just recognizing them and really enjoyed his entire trip. I know he would feel that way even if he didn’t win the Grand Prize but it sure puts the icing on the cake!!! Leo was both stunned and elated when the lock went "CLICK!" I am genuinely glad both for these guys.

All in all….it was a great time and I can’t wait till next year. I hope we can hook up again.

Catchem-up!!

Jim

BTW Vineyardhaven and Edgartown harbors have busted wide open with big albies today!! The albies are huge...14#+ (no BS) I heard of one going 15....ya just never know.
