Talking Striper on ICE

Knowing that the temp. has been scorching in the Boston area I thought this may cool it down. John R. mentioned this briefly awhile back. After checking with my locol biologist to get the facts straight, this is it. Fred Gardner Jr. of East Machias caught a striped bass while ice fishing Hadley Lake in East Machias in March of 1990. It took Fred 10 minutes to land the fish -which was 73/4 inches around- through a 9 inch hole in the ice. The fish was 333/4inches,12 pounds 9 ounces. After showing off his strange catch the Maine Warden Service confiscated the fish, the fish being caught out season. The fish was mounted and donated to the Machias Valley Sportsman's Club where it can now be viewed. OH no! The Sox just lost to Detroit. The East Machias river is as far north as stipers run to my knowledge. The Narraguagus river has only given up 4 or 5 fish so far this year ! Boo Hoo
