Old Flares, what do you do with them?

I don't know if you ever looked but flares expire in about 3 years time. You are suppose to replace them. Technically you are not suppose to light them off in your back yard. I would like to do just that and have my kids and wife light one off or even shoot the flare gun just for the experience of doing it but I don't want to see an orange and white rescue helo hovering over my yard. I heard the the USCG has a day when you can go to their site and shoot these off but I have never seen this advertised anywhere. I suppose I could have them shoot it into a trashcan of water but that sounds dangerous and will not give them the experience I want them to have of shooting one into the sky for rescue.

What do you do with your old flares? chuckem?
