welcome to the site jack-

Ive never fished it, but as far as timing goes, I do well fishing herring run areas at high noon on a sunny day when things start to heat up. I think that I do well at that strange time of the day because the herring choose to move around in daylight and hunker down at night.. who knows... since you are interested in it and have never fished it, the more you poke around in your yak, the more you will learn about what the fish are up to. Look for ambush points that the bass would use for attacking herring moving up the river like boulder fields, drop offs, points with ledges off of them. Osprey are your friends as well.. follow them and more often than not they will lead you to fish.
