I think big rods and big reels are over rated unless you have good experience slowly increasing in size with them. Big change from a 6500C3 on a 7 to an 11 and change on a 7500 non-levelwind. Not saying it ain't worth it to try but there might be more bumps and bruises along the way. A 10' with a 7 series levelwind might have been a more intermediate step...
(course, I'm a wuss and use levelwind for all casting with conventionals)
