I'm trying to remember the details. I think that Billy Sullivan originally wasn't going to let him coach the game, but somehow Fairbanks wound up on the sidelines anyway. Maybe the players went to bat for him. I remember that Sullivan got a standing O when he walked out onto the field, while Fairbanks was booed--roundly.
When you think of the talent on those Fairbanks teams--how they never went beyond the first round of the playoffs is beyond me
