Porker on light tackle

Went out fishing with my friend Dave to a spot that I haven't been to in a long time.

We were hoping to see the beginnings of a cinderworm "hatch" in a saltwater pond
in the western sound.

We were thinking that we would be throwing some small stuff, small flies
and jigs so we scaled back our tackle accordingly. Dave brought his flyrod
and a light spinning, and I brought my steelhead rod.

When we got on scene, we discovered that they have not begun to emerge.

We decided to fish anyway. I got a couple of strikes, then I hooked a fish.
Like a fool, I played the fish the same way I normaly would, completely
forgeting that I had a 12# leader. The fight was short, and its finale was a nice
splash on the surface with my naked line sling-shotting back at me.
Lost both a nice fish and my favorite bucktail. Blast! For whatever
reason, I didn't have another 1/2 oz bucktail, so I put on a 3/4 oz
and a new 30# leader.

Another 15 minutes passed without a bump, and just as
I suggested we split, I got a strike followed by a solid hookup.

Its been a long time since I have used this rig. I used it the most when
I fished southern California. Its a VS100 paired with a lamiglas g1311 steelhead rod, my
mainline is 15# powerpro, so I had to play the fish in a bit. It was fun to
hear the little VS drag sing, and such a prize to find this porker on the end.

It was by far the biggest striper I have caught on this setup.
