So, Clogston....Bridge question
Given the bridge span collapse in Washington, how long before we have a bridge in Mass. fail?

It apparently was hit but an oversized truck which caused the collapse.

I have surveyed some of those structures years ago, and when i was underneath them watching where the bridge buttresses up against the road, many of them moved and were continuously jostle by the force of trucks and heavier cars giving great cause for concern. The last one I did, the bridge on George Washington Blvd. In Hingham was the absolute worst. It was replaced a few years later. Then again just because the structure moved doesn't mean it is deficient, maybe.

It takes a lot for a bridge to actually collapse as there's so much redundancy and load redistribution on most structures. If/when it happens it will be an old structure, most likely a truss. State has special inspection requirements for fracture critical elements to monitor for fatigue cracks, but something can happen quickly. Vessel collision taking out a pier could also do it.

the state has spent millions on our bridge to no where over the last 3 years...still an on going project...it was built in 1952 and a lot of steel structure has been replaced...  |

Which one?
The annisqam bridge has had quite a bit of work done. Sucks inspecting that one. Have to crawn through the entire length of the arch boxes in a tyvek suit with respirator due to the pigeons.
