Read any news source right now. The pilot was a huge supporter of the largest opposition group.

I can't believe the "officials" didn't investigate the simulator's drive history until four or five days had passed.....
That said, I don't believe in transparency and the general public's "right" to know everything as it happens. Some information just doesn't need to be out there in real time.

I'd wager there's a lot our government knows that hasn't been released to the press.
People may just be thanking the NSA when this is all said and done

I think plane is on the ground, in one piece, in a Russian state. Not sure what they would have done about passengers. They wouldn't last long if someone lowered oxygen levels by overriding controls. Crew has their own oxygen supply. At least on American carriers.
But someone, or something on that plane was the target, IMHO. The plane itself could have been the target, but I don't think so. I also think our two naval assets already in the Indian Ocean are not there with the search as their primary mission. I would expect a larger presence soon.

I heard today that there are over 600 runways where the plane could have landed.
Also the pilots family moved out the day before the flight and have not been heard from . I'm not sure the validity of all this. I just heard bits and pieces on the news

I'm leaning toward the cockpit fire theory for now…seems to fit most of the evidence…aside from the bit where some communication equipment was turned off before the co-pilot signed off…but perhaps that reporting is wrong.

that wouldn't explain no messages from passengers getting thru
unless they all were out of range but i thought "maybe "
a satellite might
be able to get a signal ... i dunno

any time there's electromagnetic interference
from an electromagnetic pulse weapon
or any other source ...nothing works anymore
that could be an explanation of why the pilot was flying
such a crazy pattern if it wasn't a deliberate act
of hijacking the aircraft
same thing happened to 8 of our own navy pilots
a long long time ago after some planes went missing and they
were the search squad....NONE of them were ever found again.

Some interesting remarks by pilots I read today. They suspect the front tires caught on fire on take off or a fire started in another manner. The captain would know what airport options he had in case of an emergency and entered this into the autopilot first thing. Then they'd start shutting down systems to isolate the issue. Pilots get overwhelmed by smoke and are knocked out...the plane then continues on autopilot until it runs out of gas.
There is an ideal airport on the new heading they took...they would have flown right over it.
Doesn't answer everything but it is a plausible scenario.

Remember Paine Stewart . The plane climbed to 65k . Is this not plausible here also ?

One would think that the first thing that the pilot would do is notify the tower that THERE WAS A FIRE ON BOARD...
I think that this was a pilot suicide event due to his political beliefs to bring attention to the opposition party. I also think that the Malaysian government has known this all along and is a reason why it was so slow to release information..

There's nothing ground control can do to help at that instant. I'd think their energy would be focused on where the aircraft was going and addressing the issue. If it was a bad fire you could have perhaps a few minutes.
I'm sure there's a pretty standard process they train for in these situations.

They've reported that the very first thing ingrained in pilots when an emergency occurs is to communicate the issue to ground control (especially when manually shuttting systems down). I'm not a pilot so I can't confirm but it's been reported numerous times so far.

If I remember it was aviate, navigate then communicate.
The "incident" appears to have happened as they were passing off to Thai controllers. That could have contributed confusion.

Nope.
Aviate, navigate then communicate.
That puts ATC Last.

Spence beat me to it. What may further be an issue with communications is if they were switching over to HF radio.
