How to remove mack scales from rod

Anyone have a good way to clean up a rod that has a pretty good coat of mack scales on it?

I agree leave them on but you don't need clear coat they will never come off . my fishing rods ,steering wheel and shifter are covered and won't come off , they could have used mack scales to hold the heat tiles on the space shuttle they are so strong
