What a way to end the season - Striper Talk Striped Bass Fishing, Surfcasting, Boating

Went out Saturday and headed for a couple of cod spots. Found plenty of dogfish still (that pessed me off). I had to keep moving to catch a cod here and ther before the dogs would find me again. They found me again (pessed me off). Finally got to a good area with only a few dogs and started catching fish, but many just too short.. Waiting for the biggins. I wanted to pull anchor to move a hundred feet or so just onto a bump. But, the anchor was stuck on a pot line. (pessed me off). This was the pot line from hell, i have never hooked into one that would not come up (till now).. I tried everything to free it, and the struggle killed my windlass. (peesed me off). After almost an hour of this I had to cut the line and say goodbye to my anchor and rode. (pessed me off). That also ended the fishing because it was blowing to hard to drift. I went home with barely any fish for the table. (pessed me off)
SO,,,seeing how I was not going to get the windlass fixed quick enough and get a new anchor, chain and all, I decided to pull her on Sunday. Had some help at the marina ramp from some 'dockmates", but would'nt you know it, while cranking her onto the trailer, the power winch died. Luckily I got the boat all the way on, but it is basically dead. (pessed me off). SO the boat is home safely, but i now have two major winter projects as well as all the other little projects on my list.
Nice end to my season !!!!!!!
Other than that the weekend was great !!!!!!!!---NOT !!!!!---

Fellow boaters feel your pain! Actaully as sick as it sounds....your pain makes me feel a little better knowing that I am not the only one pissing away lots money on boats...thanks for making me feel better!!

I make the repairs/replacements and be ready for next year.

Next anchor you get write your name and phone # on it with a permanent marker. I'd bet you will get a call. Lobstermen lose a lot of gear/time due to recs cutting their lines when they hook a traul, and are happy to help you hoping for reciprication. Bring a 12 pack of beer down to Hewitts and you can probably get 2 setups of your choice. They don't throw them away.

I was actually thinking of putting at least a phone number on the next one. Now that you said that, I will.
This has NOT been a big issue though, in all my years of boating and hooking trap lines, I think this is only the 2nd anchor I kissed goodbye. What burns me is my windlass, I know I can repair it, but just to get it off is a PIA....

Also I am thinking of swtiching from standard danforth to a
spade type anchor (it may come free easier when I drive around the other side of a snag.) I know CQR are good but too much $$$.

Lookin for advice......

Brief description if it not clear just yell. Drill a hole in the flat piece between the flukes and insert a shackle. Put the end of your chain through the shackle that you just installed. Lay the chain and the bar of the anchor on a flat surface and secure the link of the chain that meets the eye in the bar to the eye of the bar with several heavy duty wire ties. Next time the anchor gets stuck cleat off the anchor line and run up on the anchor at an angle, power up the boat until you snap the wire ties. Now the anchor should come right out as you pulling on it opposite and away from the flukes.

Mako, I get it, I saw that in another thread. Sounds good as long as the chain laying across the shaft does interfere with it passing through. There are lots of release type anchors on the market too.
Anyway, its not the lost anchor that's got me, its the damage/repair (hopefully) to my windlass. That sucker costs over 6 bills, and I really don't want to replace it.

Mike, Yes I have the stainless steel grappling anchors I make at work (Uhhhh,,,,in my spare time), but they are not a primary anchor. They wont hold in soft bottom,. If you remember I use it to hold the boat near rockpiles as a second anchor out the back. It does bend so it will come out of the rocks, and bends back easy. Works good to recover niner rigs stuck on the bottom too..

This weekend I will take the windlass off and open up to see the damage.

You really need a ring and ball set up for when the anshor is too stuck for the windlass to work on. Personally, I don't want a windlass, they are a PITA and the ring and ball set up isn't that much more difficult to use, especially in deep water.
