Patrick, the other issue is don't underestimate how little it takes to cause a plug not to run true.

If the eye or lip or even the hooks are slightly off, it can cause the plug to pull right or left. I would think that any lip changing system would be tough to maintain... especially in strong current, heavy surf, bouncing off rocks, salt corrosion, not to mention what a nice bass or blue would do to it.

Its an interesting idea, but their are plenty of ways to fish the water column. You can fit plenty of different plugs, plastics, etc in a decent surf bag. Its also IMO, part of what makes a good surf fisherman... Fishing limited water with what you carry with you.
