Got Some New Pliers!!!
Pretty excited.....had been looking for a pair of the Van Staal titanium pliers, but with the company going under and selling out, I did not think that I would find a pairany time soon if at all. I was headed home from fishing down the Cape Friday and stopped into a bait and tackle shop that I had read about. They had a brand new pair of 7" Van Staal titanium pliers complete with the cord and leather sheath. Great deal too! $240.00! I thought that I would never pay that much for a pair of pliers but they are worth it. Hopefully they will last a lifetime.

Ya evah seen da Van Staal Pliers???? Day are awesome!!! Got tired of buying the $20.00 stainless steel pliers and pulling them out of my pocket every time I needed them, or dropping them in the water and losing them. These should last for ever and when I need to unhook that big fish, they will be right at my side.

BigFish - i used to have the Vs pliers. the cutters suck. they will wear out very fast on braid. you are better off with the donnmars. for $20, you send the old pair in and they send you a brand new pair. the donnmars cut braid like butter!

I carry a myerchin rescue sheath knife and a pair of $60 rigging pliers that have a lanyard and sheath.
Could never justify the cost of the van staal pliers...

Not so much the cutters I needed, it was just a pair of pliers with a sheath that will last longer than two weeks before they seize up on me from the salt. Sure, I looked around at just about everything I could find in stores and catalogs, but there was nothing that I felt could withstand the salt water like titanium. What are the Donmars made of?

Wait till you fish them for a few years straight without any sort of maintenance or rinsing in fresh water (other then a quick cleaning at the end of the season) and there won't be a hint of rust on them. Also the 7" jaws have a perfect slot to grip eel hooks with when you tighten down your knots. And when an obnoxious toothy criiter inhales multiple trebles your pliers will have a death grip on the hook as you remove it. That's why they are worth it. For me anyways.
That and maybe the old pliers had jaws that didn't cut Fireline and Spectra, but the recent ones do just fine cutting briad on a daily basis.
Good price on the pliers as well, you more or less got the sheath and lanyard for free.

Thanks for the positive feedback Pete G! Nice to hear good things from someone who uses the VS pliers. Not that the rest of the guys who responded have not used them, but I tried the rest, now I hope I have the best. Would still like to hear about those Donmar pliers.

Toby's right---the cutting jaws won't last if you have to do any heavy cutting with them---like cutting wire or cutting hooks.

I like finger nail clippers for clipping line (braid/mono) and my $7 stainless pliers are in their 3rd year, they've been frozen shut before, but a wire brush wd40 and elbow grease they're as good as new. I've been lucky with these pliers, but I'm too prone to losing, misplacing, and leaving behind small stuff.

What Toby said. I blew up my VS pliers up with a .300 winchester magnum round, with the mil-dot crosshairs right on the cutters at 100 yards.
I have two pairs of Shimano stainless pliers - less than $20 apiece. They are prone to rust, but hey if you take care of them they'll last you a long time. If you rinse them off with fresh water and hit them with WD-40 you're golden. Once in a while when you've got time scrub them down with comet or ajax scouring powder and they're like knew. If you can take care of your pliers, I doubt you'd spend $240 worth of replacement stainless pliers in your lifetime!

Like my Ocean State Job Lot 2.99 pliers. They cut spectron and spiderwire with no trouble, I can buy a ton of them for the price of a pair of Van Staals

Good luck with the VS pliers. hope they give you a lifetime of satisfaction.
i use nickel plated steel pliers. Cut well and the nickel plating helps ward off rust. they don't last forever but they outlast the unplated or cheap chrome plated ones.

I picked up a half dozen at Ocean State in March. Still on the first pair. Just out of curiosity did any of you tell your wife what they cost? And what were her last words to you?

After making fun of a fishing partner for his hot pink leash on his pliers earlier this year and explaining how I had had the same pair of junk pliers for 3 years without losing them, and what do ya know, next night I lost them. Bought a pair of the new Rapala pliers. They are real nice. They are coated so they don't rust at all. They are spring loaded so they open up and they have a split ring plier thingy built reight into the end. They don't flex when trying to unf$%*&(*^ a set of trebles out of a bluefish. And they came with a real nice sheath with a heavy duty metal clip and velcro closure and a lanyard, all for like $23 beans.

the donnmars are made in both stainless steel and titanium. i have the stainless CP950's they run about $110. they will rust, but a quick shot of WD-40 after each trip and i have no rust on this pair. as i said earlier, you send them back with a check for $20 and they send you a brand new pair. here is a pick of the titanium CP950Ti's. the stainless look the same except for different colored rubber. they are 7 and 3/8" long. i would steer anyone looking into these away from the smaller models. the cutters are no where near the same thing. i think that the two smaller sizes they make are geared more towards freshwater guys. as i said, i already had a pair of VS's, and now i use these. i would rather pay for the Donnmars than get a free pair of VS pliers. the pliers are the only VS product i would not recommend!
