Vertigo

Well, just been diagnosed with Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). On Monday morning I woke up and reached for my glasses on the night stand. At that moment I had a feeling that the room was spinning and I was very light headed. It lasted around 10 seconds or so. I hadn't had that feeling since my very first drunk as a young man when you go to sleep and the whole bed feels like its spinning.

Once I stood up I was fine. That evening the same thing happened when I was reclined while watching TV. That night when in bed the dizzyness would kick in every time I turned over. It was scary. So I called my Doc told him my symptoms - he knew right away it was BPPV. It all is connected to the inner ear. So I'm getting ready to retire in two months and thoughts of spending lots of time standing on rock perches casting for bass - but this vertigo thing could put a real crimp to my favorite pastime. I'll be trying an Epley maneuver which is to realign the balance crystals of the ear. Has anyone dealt with this type of vertigo?

The wife wakes up one morning and we didn’t know what to think... I called 911 and had her hauled to the hospital,,, nauseous, spinning, could hardly stand... scared the hell out of me..

It turned out to be vertigo... never had it before, doc says it’s a pretty common affliction... gave her something for the nausea and said to take it easy and no sudden head moving.... could last a week or so and it did..

Also said may never happen again,,,, hasn’t, thank god!

If you have the same version as my wife had DZ, you’ll be on the rocks when they’re back...

Yeah, I started getting it a few years back.
I believe it's caused by some kind of crystal in you inner ear that gets dislodged, and when it moves in the inner ear you get the vertigo.
There is a process to correct it.
First thing is to figure out which ear is causing the issue.
If you are lying flat on your back and you turn to your right and it starts, then it's your right ear. Mine is the right ear as well.

Although I've never done the procedure itself, what I do eventually does the same thing in the end.

I would sleep on my left side with no problems, but if I roll over to my right, "presto". and yes it only last a few seconds.
It's not so much a problem when you are standing, but it most noticeable when lying down or first standing up.

Unfortunately it may never go completely away, but is completely manageable.

The first time I got it was probably close to 20 years ago.
Woke up on a Sat morning, got out of bed and proceeded to fall right back in bed as the spinning caught me completely off guard.
Went to my doctor, and was prescribed Meclazine(?) to ward off the dizziness.

Once that spell passes, it was over 10 years until it hit again.
This time I knew what it was, and what I needed to do to combat the effects. Not once did I get dizzy and fall over while standing.
It will hit you when you get up from lying down and when you first lie down.

What's funny is that you can do all the steps in the procedure (that can be found online) and one day, quite surprisingly, it will have stopped.
How long will it be gone for, no one can say.
Once you know what it is, it makes it easier to deal with and treat.

Update - I did the Epley maneuver over the weekend and it worked! I'm back at about 90 percent. Just a little residual "light headedness" on occasion but no spinning sensations at all.

A few IPA’s a night will help maintain the perfect blend of spinning and favorable dizziness.

dizziness........

i get it once or twice a week DZ
and the first thing i do is head to the refrigerator
and get a piece of candied ginger out of the butter flip open section.
it's like dried papaya consistency purchased at the health food store.
i also will take a powdered GINGER capsule and it makes it go away.
try it....google it... highly recommended
