RI Tourney October 13.
We got to get everything finalized for this. Its just two weekends away. I expect Don M will be providing the grill like he did last time. that helps a lot. If everybody brings the same food they did the last time , we'll be eating like kings again. We should try to get some idea about how many people so that we know how much to bring. last time we only had enough left over to feed 20 more people so just in case we get 21 extras this time we should try to estimate the count.
One thing that worries me a little is the timing of the barbecue. This is fall fishing in RI and in the mornings and from about 3 PM til sunset there are often many oppurtunities for fish blitzing the beaches at East beach , Weekapaug and Misquamicut. Usually its smaller fish but sometimes its big ones. There are also plenty of bluefish around and at least as of now , the Bonito and Albies are still around. Nice chance to toss a fly with a 9 or 10 weight or use some light equipment ( I use a steelhead rod) and have some fun. Its also beautiful on the RI beaches on a fall afternoon.
The tides are such that there should be great condidtions at sunrise and sunset. In the absence of any other considerations , I'd want to be fishing southwest RI from a bout 3:30 AM till about 7:30AM Sat morning then again from about 3 PM til about 9 or 10 PM. Smokey and I will also be fishing Friday night.
Anyway , what I hope to avoid is being in a parking lot at 4 PM while fish are blitzing at Fresh Pond Rock (or some other similar scenerio). Maybe we should try to gather at Weekapaug Bait and tackle somewhat earlier (say noon) so that we can actually be heading for the beaches by about 3 PM. I know its a little late since some may already have the day planned around a later gathering but ..... what does everyone think?
Next year , we should plan to be tailgating on East Beach or Misquamicut for the RI final leg.

Maybe call it brunch and meet late morning, so everyones good to go at 3 pm like you say. I'm planning on coming and throwing some plastic around those beaches. No korkers, but I might throw in my rain pants and my winter hiking boots (with spikes), just in case.

I talked to Don last night and we are cool for the grille and meeting there as last time... He also said that he will be keeping the shop open, probably through the entire night.
Saltheart - you are right about the blitzes and I would hate too miss one because some strawberry desert has put the lead in my butt again ... We were originally looking at 3PM or so but if we moved that up a couple hours or so, would that interfere with people getting there on time?
We'll have a high tide after 6pm so we'll have at least two tides to work...
Let's also get a running list of who can make it, can't make it, ot too early to tell....
Again, October 13th, Westerly Rhode Island around 1 or so?

I might be able to make it by 2, I need to get some eels , but 1 is pushing it a little for me. If I can't make it you'll see me on the beach for sure.

I plan on heading down with Specialist and another batch of venison burgers. John what do I need for gear? Will we be plugging or dunking bait? I'm open for any type of fishing or maybe I'll just sneak back to the Ditch.

C-ratt - You can fish however you want, whether rock hoppin' or chunkin' so that's not a problem at all.

I have a permission slip to get out after around 7-8 , so if my van can get me to RI again and not head east to the ditch, then I will be at Weekapaug around 9 or so. Any burgers gonna be left?
If the shop is open, I will hit that first and then try to find my way around in the dark.

Guys,
Mindi and I will be there. We gotta get to the room and do some stuff but we'll be there ASAP. If we are running late, we'll catch up with you the next day.
I'll try and bring something. What do you need and how many people will be there? Obviously, I'm restricted to non-parishable items because it takes an hour to get there and we have limited room. Also, I can't bring something you absolutely need in case we are running late but if you do need something like sodas or some bags of chips, I'm game. Just tell me what ya need.
Moving it more towards noon would sorta be bad for us. Mindi and her ride have like a 5 hour trip to my place, then an hour or two to Don's shop but don't let use inconvienance you. We'll get up there and if you guys have taken off, we'll just stick around the shop and find some spots nearby and take turns.
A bunch of you said you'd let Mindi borrow a setup. First, thank you. Mindi only has two arms that I'm aware of so we only need one set up. If you guys who offered want to decide amongst yourself.
About the rod and this might limit who can bring it.
Mindi is only 5'0" and weighs about 10lbs wet so a long rod is pretty much out of the question. She should be able to handle a 8-9.5 footer.
Now I'm not trying to embarrass her, but Mindi isn't used to a surf rod and hasn't learned how to load the rod right. If you have a rod that loads easy, then that would be perfect. Most my plugs are around 1 oz.
Thanks a lot guys
P.S. I hear BM is bringing us all plugs.

Patrick & Mindi - just bring yourselves. Nothing else would be needed.
My spinning surfrod that I'm building does not look like it will be ready by then 9 (just too much happening). Plus, it's a 9 footer with a 6500SS. Besides, where we will be in Rhody, there is truly no need for anything over 10 feet other than some very specific applications or just plain preferrence. My Cell phone will be available to all and if you don't have. DonM @ Weekapaug will...

talk about great timing.. there is a parade saturday morning that i am committed to (i should be committed). if all goes well i can escape here by 1:00. not sure what would be the quickest way there..over the bridges and down route 1, or go around and down route 95? never been to misquamicut so you tell me. i'll still bring some of the womans' potatoe salad, but have a feeling everyone will be fishing by the time i get there. i'm just hopeing to hook up with someone, i'll bring some snakes but most likely will be chunking from the beach.. is potatoe salad good chum???

Redcrabber, for you it would be better to go over the bridges and down rt. 1. It's a tossup for me to do that or rt 95.

Hey Bob - ok - loding info & two sets of directions:
Lodging info from a previous thread:
Quote:
Nothing really close to the shop...most a mile or two away. However, we will be able to send someone to get you if you wish. Go to www.misquamicut.org there are a number of places to stay. The Andera Hotel is directly on the beach and has the lighte on all night long and offers some great fishing right out your back door, somewhat pricy. Around the corner on Winnapaug road about a 200 yard walk is the Newland motel(kitchenettes to boot) only 7 or 8 rooms but she caters to fishermen in the fall(you will need to call her ASAP). Any place on Winnapaug RD or Atlantic Avenue will suit you fine. If you need any additional info give us a call at the shop 401-322-8058 or request info at www.weekapaug.com you will also find a link to misquamicut.org on our site.
Directions:
I95 north to exit 92, go right onto RT 2, follow for about 1 mile to RT 78 go right(sign says RI beaches), follow to end, go left onto US RT 1, at the second light(Dunns corners) go right at the Mobil gas station. Go through 1 light, in about 100 yards you will see the Weekapaug Breachway on your right, you will see a bridge on your right, go right over the bridge, we are the second building on the right.

John I had a good time with the kids in upstate NY ( catskills game farm and howe caverns ) good place for kids over 3 . I fished in a local pond for bucketmouths ( 3 ) as the rivers were dry . Then a week fishing on the cape first 3 days were slow due to the storm but I didnt give up ! then the action picked up on wed - fri I had some real nice fish up to 28# . Now im back at work aaaarrrrggghhhh . I just know the fishing kicked up a notch sat night when I was resting for the ride home with the family . Wish my wife could drive a standard !
thanks for asking

Looking forward to seeing all of you on Saturday...the grills are ready. Eels will be large and as black as possible(especially for John R).
Fishing report:
Saturday and Sunday were a bit slow after the blow we had. However, this morning and this afternoon had fish up and down the beaches. Lots of bluefish and a good amount of stripers as well. I'll try to keep all of you up to date throughout the week.
