Human hook removal...
So after the recent incident of hooking my buddy by accident( or was it... ) I figured I'd post this, later I'll post what you should have in your medical kit.
First off, ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS carry a pair of pliers that can cut a hook, any hook you carry. On an offshore boat we had both cutters and a cordless dremel that would cut monster shark/tuna hooks. I had one in my hand, trust me, you're not gonna wanna leave it in.
Easiest: Force the barb out through the skin if its not too deep, cut the barb off, back it out, apply liberal alcohol/hydrogen peroxide, toss a bandage over it. If your tetanus shot isn't up to date, GO GET ONE!
As far as pushing the barb through, I've found doing it myself was easiest, some people find it easier to have someone else do it. Whatever works for you.
Second method is the snatch method, I've never used this, but I'm sure someone on here has before.
To perform the snatch method when the barb is imbedded, all that's needed is a short length of fishing line, at least 10 pound test, approximately 2 feet long.
1. Remove hook from lure.
2. Double the fishing line and loop it around the hook, as close to the skin's surface as possible.
3. Hold onto both ends of the doubled line, wrapping them around your hand for a firm grip and holding the line parallel to the skin's surface in line with the hook.
4. With your other hand, press the eye of the hook down onto the surface of the skin and back toward the hook's bend, as if trying to back the hook out of the wound.
5. While pressing on the hook eye, yank the line sharply, parallel to the skin and in line with the hook, to snap the hook back out of the wound.
6. Apply antibiotic ointment, bandage wound and check to make sure tetanus shots are current.

IU worked one back out last year, it was less painful than leaving it in.

I did the snatch a few weeks ago , so that sounded a bit funny, but it worked. I got a nice gamakatsu octopus stuck in my finger with it attached to a 30 pound tackle box, im sure the folks on the other side of the canal knew what just happened. After i got it out of the tackle box i cut bout 4 feet of 45 pound mono, doubled it up and put it around the hook at the bend. I had the old lady push down on the shank to make it come out close to the same way it went in. I didnt exactly snatch it out, it was more of a steady pull, i was too freaked out to yank it. It was nasty looking, the skin was pulled up quite a bit then there was a nice pop and a splash of blood on my shirt, a few choice words, wrapped it up in my bandana and got a tetnus shot. The doc said it looked pretty good. They still push it thru. Now i carry a small bottle of iodine, bacitracin, gauze and tape in my plug sack, so i can keep fishing.

i think we need to make a visual display of this
im still kinda about the pushing down on the shank
i can set bones and wrap up compounds
but ripping a hook out has its own place.

i didnt have the shank pushed down that far, but it still worked. I think i read about it in field and stream. I kept reading it over and over just in case and it payed off.

One added thing i learned ,besides the tetnaus shot get an oral antibiotic for 7 or 10 days.Too much danger in gettin Fishermans disease, especially if it was in a blue or striper. Always helps to soak the whole area in a betadine solution for a 1/2 hour or so. I lost one friend to tetnaus, and another to fishermans disease and that was due to an open cut while cleaning.

Don't forget a razor
Happened to me four nights ago. Believe me if the barb is big like on a 4/0 treble it does not want to push through. I got the point through easily enough but not the barb. While pushing on it I touched the skin over the barb with a razor. It made a small slit and the barb popped through.
So, have a razor or very sharp knife too in addition to cutters.

I've used the snatch method a couple times, just make sure the barb is aligned the way it went in before you try to snatch the hook out.

Oh man...ouch
I have been poked a few times, but I am wondering when you most likely get a hook so deep?

Usually when your tired and let down your guard when unhooking a fish.
One other point, if the hook ends up in the back of your hand better get to a Doc for removal. If it happens to penetrate a hand tendon you can loose motion in your hand and or fingers.

damn cat
one day....i came home from work and found that my cat had got into my fresh water tackle box and had played with all of the lures that smelled fishy i'm sure...and had them spread all over the spare room carpet... after a few choice words for the cat i picked them all up and put them all away... all except for one.... it was hidden in the folds of a green small parachute which i use to camoflage a vehicle
when i have to park in a restricted (unsafe)area.... well to make a long story shorter ...i picked up the parachute and was twirling it extremely fast trying to make it rolled up....and whamo i found the missing plug
and it was now deeply buried in my right palm...so deep that i ended up having to go to the Hospital to have it removed.

I agree to getting it out,,,, I also think that you should not wait before you start messing with it,,,, I got one this year while it was attached to my plug and a stinking bluefish,,, during the time it took to get the fish to stop yanking it deeper and the pliers out it started swelling,,,, since I was fishing alone by the time I got rid of the bluefish and the plug it was really hard to push the barb through the rest of the way,, I was amazed how tough skin is,,,,, So do not wait to get it out,,,,,,,

you have to yank like you are starting a chainsaw. Go for it and it will pop right out, but you gotta just go for it.

The snatch method is the one employed by emergency room physicians I believe.

Yes and no.
Depending on how deep it is and placement they'll either push it through and cut it off or do the snatch.

I was "lucky" enough to get one hook on a treble in the side of my thumb angled in toward the thumb bone. The hook was well past the bend so no way to yank and also no way to push it through. The doctor sliced my thumb apart to get at it. It was honestly 1 in a 1000's times that I would have a barbed treble on a plug. Just forgot to crimp em when I took it out of the package that night.

I fell off a jetty one time and when I got up,lo and behold a large popper was stuck to my shoulders,I tried to pull it out but the barb was in deep,so I went to the local hospital and they used the push through method but when they pushed it through they had nothing to cut the barb off with,so I rummaged through my tackle and came up with pliers, lucky they gave me a pain killing shot first because they had a hard time cutting the barb but eventially they cut it off and pulled it through.

When I was a kid, I had a redfin get stuck in my right thum, right into the joint. Went to the hospital and they worked on it for around 1/2 hour. They ended up cutting my finger open more to get the barb free. No way to push it out, it was right in the joint. MAN that hurt

Elapsed time from first shot to hook out 10 Seconds! Hurt like a M/F

A few hook stories:
I feel your pain(s)
I did what I call the semi-snatch method last year to a buddy. While on Nantucket my fishing partner and I were into some big bluefish from the beach. It was a blast. During the blitz he called me over to him. He said, I have a little bit of a problem here..." I look down and see he has one of my new tins on his line. He has one of the prototypes that has a 6X treble on there and one of the hooks is in his hand all the way and I mean deep. He said, can you get it out? oh man....I said I don't know. I can't push it through because of a bone is in the way and I think I would do a lot more damage. Further I don't have anything on me (I was not in my truck, I was a guest) that can cut this hook, these are forged and are tough. After taking the lure off the hook I was able to work it a little without killing him and told him...I can get it out but it is going to hurt, or we can go to the hospital and they will numb you up and dig it out...what do you want to do? He said I want to keep fishing, take it out now! OK, and I did it but I didn't YANK anything I just applied pressure and eventually was able to back it out. It blend like a mofo but we wrapped it up with a gauze and tape and he kept fishing and hooked up on the very next cast. He had thick hands and is a tough sombitch. I can tell you it was painful and he didn't flinch much.
For me, lots of minor ones but only two bad ones....
1) no moon at SW point BI all alone 2:00am Nov, cold nw wind, conditions rough standing on slime covered boccie balls waist deep in waves. Long story but ended up with a bottle plug lodged in my face with trebles in my cheek and one in my eye (or so I thought) blood everywhere, line was tight on the plug and I thought if I fell I would rip my eye out and half my face along with it. Could not make it to shore without hurting myself. Cut the line and removed it on the spot. Lots more blood. Hook went through both eyelids and only scratched my eye. The others were in my cheek. Got them out, (it took some cajones let me tell you to remove them while standin in waves) and I was happy I could see out of that eye when I finally got it out. Went to the doc the next day...everything worked out ok.
2) the last time I had a deep hook in my hand I was again by myself on my boat. caught a mid 20's bass, reached down to lip him and the boat took a funny roll in the rip and a hook was deep in my hand with the fish still attached to the other hook. I reached down with my other hand and pulled the fish on board. It was flapping around and causing me great pain with each of his movements. I was telepathically communicating with the fish and I swear the fish told me..."Who's got who now mf?" It was hard to unhook the fish with my left hand but I pinned with my knee and was able to unhook it. I did the push through, cut and back out method (I have HD cutters on-board). I squeezed some antibiotic ointment in the hole until it came out the other side. And took some oral antibiotics when I got home It hurt like a mofo but it healed up.

There's actually a video on the snatch method. I believe it's on the other SB site.
