I have had my kayak for a month now and love it
I can gett to places that a boat wouldn't dream of going.
I have caught three keepers out of it and its a blast
When you hook into a fish it will pull you around and do circles, its great

I think this is the best way to hit some really awsome spot and catch some really big fish If you guys ever get the chance to Yak fish than DO IT, you will be hooked forever

I have a yak and I have taken it into salt ponds and had a blast. I took it out in the open ocean once and the swells were big and I got spooked, never tryed it again.
There has been a lot of posts out here the last few months on yak fishing and i am getting my courage up again.
What size rod do you use when fishing from the kayak?

i would think getting tosed around by waves is fun but thats just me

I have my Yak rigged up with three rod holders(there is a milk crate in the back with holders) I bring a really heavy rod for trolling and 2 rods in that are in the medium range. All spinning to keep it simple.

That would be great to get alittle trip going. Im up for early Sun. maybe we could go Joppa flats Just need to figure outthe tides

CO, what length are the rods?
I used a light action St Croix 8ft rod in the kayak, but I do not have any med/hvy rods under 9 feet whcih are too big.

I just got one a week ago. It is a tremendous amount of fun and also a tremendous amount of paddling



Fishfinder showed up today and I hope to use it tonight.

so far I have taken 5 fish with in two outings. All keepers over 30". It is a little hairball being out in the heavier stuff. Not anything I am interested in conquering.

I have a 7' light spin and a bomber 7' Star rod for the bait. The Star rod is a bit cheesy but it's got a good backbone and is short. If I am going to a place where I plan to beach it and walk some areas I might bring an 8'6" two piece which I'll stow.

Beleive it or not I have actually had more fish of the beach in the past week than the Gayak.

I have two 8 footers and a 7ft. I think it is all preference. My combos are not very expensive but they suit the situation perfectly. I have two okuma coranados and a okuma fina. the fina has a walmart rod that i accualy like and the big cd65 coranado has a diawa eliminator rod at 8ft which it feels heavy but its a med action. The other coranado is a cd50 and has a tica 8ft med rod with the surf handle which is to long but it works alright. Within the week i should be getting a Van staal vs100 I will try to get a hev 8ft, probably a stcroix as well.

I've got a Cobra Tourer. It would easily handle your weight (plus your gear and a couple fifties in the tankwell) and sets up great for fishing. It lists the capacity at 475#.

Nils that posts on here is really good with yaks. You may want to get in touch with him about paddling differnt models, I think thats the best way to decide on which suits you. I think what you do is do a rental with them they're a sponsor try out a few dif. yaks then you go fishing. Maybe we can get a group to go out and give that a shot, we'd support a sponsor, get some good first hand knowledge and maybe boat a few nice fish

I have been trying out a few different models for both recreation and fishing.

How much is that Cobra? Who sells them in this area (MA/RI/CT)?

I really like the wilderness systems pungo as well. I find the seat to be the most comfortable. I liked it better than the SOT YAKs

The Tourer is priced higher than similar boats at retail. Mine lists at $1,283 (including 3 hatches and a rudder). They list dealers on their website and I found one near me that had a Tourer that they wanted to move so I got it for much less. I was going to get a Tarpon 160 but this ended up being a better deal.

Keeper remember that you lose alot of stability in a sit in. If you were to stay inside harbors and stay clear of the surf than you would be fine. I got a cheepo at kittery trading post for $350.
Its a Waldon Cuda angler. There was another one there for the same price. They were both used.

The tarpon 160 is an awsome yak with alot of storage and has some good speed to it but you cant rig up a milk crate or live well for storage. i fished with a guy who had a Malibu extreme and that thing is AWSOME.Chech that one out guys and search around for some pics of yak fisherman in action. I found a guy who landed a #256 bull shark in a yak. Its amazing But again its preference.

If you guys ever want to get out and yak fish then pm me. I dont work a whole lot so im on the water every chance i get

anyone ever try the hobie at one with the peddles that operate the "flippers" underneath? I guess the propel you like a whale or porpose tail.

while I haven't tried it yet I met a women on the water with one and she loved it. She said it was one of the fastest and best tracking kayak she had ever paddled. little or no fatigue, loved the peddles. And the rudder "seemed" a lot more useful than most other yaks.

To me, seems it would free up your hands a lot while fishing.

It also has a Sail option, where you can rig it up like a sail boat. Do not expect I would ever take it that far, but you never know, anything that an help you cover water you aren't fishing faster.... but seems like it would get in the way

They are about $1400 though - so for an outfit (PFD, Paddle, rigging) talking near $2000 per system. Me and the girlfriend, talking $4000. Maybe should just go out and get a 16 ft whaler or something..... but that is another whole thread and probably another forum.

TROLLING flies in a kayak works great. The fly rod is a good shock absorber. there is less chance of tipping over. Comments?

Even if you had a stiff rod you can troll. With the give of the drag,rod and just the give of the yak spinning around from the fish pulling there is little chance of flipping over. trust me i haven't even thought about flipping when trolling eels and hooked into a nice 30in. I still wouldn't worry about fish flipping you that were twice that size.

jkswimmer, I use a 6'6" boat rod with conventional reel while trolling. I have the drag set tight. (To tight at times since I have broken far to may rods this way)

One consideration is to have a rod long enough to reach across the front of the yak in case the fish goes under the yak. To fight the fish just point the rod tip to the front of the yak and go for a "Nantucket sleigh ride" I have never tipped with the drag to tight, I have spooled to reels with the drag set and not been able to tighten it anymore.

Nothin' like landin' a fatty from a yak!! I was yak fishin' for years before it became popular.

Try a 7' graphite rod with a medium weight reel. Easy to flip it into those tight spots. Any yak will do. I rigged a keewee 9 footer with a pole-holder and some bungees for those guest-yakers. It works great!

To bring 'em in, try a short handled gaff hook. If they're to big to haul in the open, you can at least drag 'em to shore.

As far as a fish-finder for a yak, u might as well buy a boat.

Keep it simple. Spend more time looking at your surroundings than some screen. The water, bait-fish, wind and the birds will let u know where the fish are.

Gotta argue the FF King Fisher. I agree, you have to take in your surrounding and tides, etc. BUT the Eagle 240 I have is great !

I haven't caught anything over 25 #'s with it but it puts me RIGHT on top of the fish every time. I have gone to spots that I was SURE held fish only to find out they weren't there. From the beach I would have kept fishing and moving. With the FF I paddle off and find them, mark them and begin to fish. Ya it is cheating but what an eye opener as to where these bass went. MANY times it is unreachable from land.

that's all the proof I needed. All up my fishfinder cost $200.

Now I have a reel, rod, Fishfinder AND A KAYAK for what one highend reel and rod set-up would have been. That is value

(and it is late July and I am catching in the daytime without all the expenses of running a boat.)
