Anthony,
I had bad luck with Whiplash on spinning reels, many windknots and snap offs during casting due to deep rooted knots. I now use Fireline on all of my spinning reels and have had great success. It actually gets better the more you use it (it gets softer).

Using braids will get you much greater casting distances and it is much more sensitive when retrieving bucktails, lures, eels etc. Also you get better hookups because you can set the hook quicker without stretch; you get a better feel for the end of the line than with mono.

In my opinion it lasts as long as you have enough on your reel that it does'nt hamper your casting distance. You do need to strip some off now and again.

I don't tie direct to a snap, I still use a mono leader, but I use both improved cinch & palomar knots tied to my barrell swivel and neither has failed.
