The cop was an idiot. If he even suspected the fox was rabid, he should have called animal control or the Dept of Health and have it tested. I wonder if he was bright enough to know not to shoot it in the head, or just got lucky.
I hope you shoveled the fox into the bag and didn't handle it with your hands. Never touch any part of a suspected rabid animal. If there's saliva on its fur and you have any kind of open cut on your hands---as fishermen often do this time of the year---you could get infected.
