This kind of completes my day... lot of memories of my buddy Bill today, shared with those of us that knew him well... then I read this, and another memory of him comes rushing to mind. Same scenario, only theres 2 of us and one moron dad and his 2 kids... he's showing the kids how to "punt" the schoolies back into the water..... me, I'm all pissed.. he just goes over the next time one of the kids catches...
"Hello young man, let me help you with that... nice fish, Oh, Hi Dad, you don't mind if I help do ya?... Nice fish, there, I'm gonna unhook him easy, see how ya hold 'em, now, I'm gonna slide him back in easy, ya know, so he can grow up real big, and you can catch him again... RIGHT DAD??? "
All the time a big smile, and real friendly... I was drop jawed and so was dad...... it worked, the next schoolie they had, they're all careful with the fish, and nice and easy on the release... That was Bill.... he was a firm believer in catching more flies with honey, than vinegar......

Karl,
Sounds like your buddy bill was a heck of a guy. I dont know what i would do in a situation like that but i think i just learned how to handle it.

Everything is better on the rocks.

Ya Karl, like Rob said. He must have been a very wise and patient man to think things out. His way was really the only solution. If i remember right you said Bill had hughe crowds at his funeral. He must have touched alot of lifes.

Not much else you could do!

Navy Chief,
You really could not treat him like a brain dead swabby. Those days are gone. Think you did the best possible thing available at the time.
