9ft is the standard all around size for plugs.eels, jetty fishing and the surf those 12ft jobs have unneeded hight to them it gets in the way most of the time. i am 5'11 and weigh 200lbs so 9ft will be good for you as well. a 8ft rod is limiting in most areas. ugly stick will get you by but a nice light tica or tsunami cant be beat for the $$.

SB, I'm just an inch taller than you, and my 9' is perfect. I had an 8...it was okay...I guess. Go with the 9. I have a Tica -- good stuff, and not hideously expensive. Try getting a rod at a local bait shop -- I'm sure they'd be more than happy to help you find what would be best for you and give you some pointers or advice if you have any questions. Good luck finding something that is both what you like and the best fit for you.

The worst day fishing is better than the best day working. ...Wait a minute, my work IS fishing. Sweet.

thats if he can get from his allowence. also he needs to pick a application for what he is fishing and where he fishes at. cuz if he doesnt, then he will be like me giving a saltheart a hard time about what rod to make for my abu 7500 BG. i say go with 8 or 9. 8 will suit u enough for fishing piers or jetties.

12 ' rod
I kind of like Striperboys moxie starting off with the 12' rod. Better than casting into the canal with that than a 6' Ugly stick with a dare devil lure tied on.
