Casting 450 ft?

Can anyone help me find the posting of where someone was talking about how they were casting an average of 450ft? I think it was about a baitcasting reel. If so what kind of reel,rod,and line would i need to send a lure flying that far?

reel was a modified BG7000HSN with ceramic bearings, brass gears,Rocket fuel oil,20 lb big game line and a custom built Lamiglas XRA 1322 ,11' rod

It's something anyone should be able to do with that set-up, and using something like a 4 oz diamond jig or Crippled Herring.

I've probably thrown that far with a 5 oz pyramid sinker using a Squidder, a yellow glass Lami and 30# Ande.

My brother SQUID KID'S DAD smokes cast 450 plus on a regular basis. Guys at the maratime academy sit down and watch in awe as every cast seemingly is going to fly across the canal. I told mikey he ought to give lessons, but he is to humble.

Squidder, 10' Uglystik, 30# Fireline, 4oz.pyramid w/worms. It's only 150yards.

Not that I've really studied the casting art, but I've found a few things critical if you want distance: First would be a smooth cast and timing. Second would be balance between rod, weight, and line. Fourth a well maintained reel. doesn't need to be expensive IMHO. Fifth practice without the fear of breakoffs. If it snaps it snaps so what. The casts get smoother and longer and pretty soon it's out there. 450 feet (150 yards potato/tomato) is not unattainable by the average avid fisherman. I saw Big Dave Thomassy cast once , I will never be that smooth, fluid and graceful with a rod and I will never cast across the Canal either. No expert here, just trying to pay attention.

that's the best I can get outta the set-up I have..not one inch further..course I'm a short little xxxx and just can't get a long swing unless I dig a hole behind me to drop the 3 0z. lead in. that get's cut in half if there's any sand bankin or bushes behind me.

What a lot of guys lose sight of is, what's on the end of your line is more of a factor than your gear.

Stuff like sinkers, metal, plugs like Roberts Rangers and so on, you can cast them to another zip code.

There's only so far that a Bomber, a big metal lip, a plastic shad, or even a bucktail jig with a lot of hair and a chunk of pork flapping in the breeze is gonna fly, no matter what you throw it on.

Even good casting plugs are only gonna go so far. I know some guys who can chuck it who fish the Canal. Guys fish directly across from each other all the time. In all the time I've fished there, I've never seen two guys cross lines across the Canal. In some places the Canal is less than 600' across at dead low. If everyone casts 100 yards with a Polaris, you should see guys cross lines over the width of the Ditch every day.

Perhaps u should think about that alittle more.guys opposite each other throwin 300 ft would basically have to meet in mid air to tangle.there's no doubt in my mind 300 ft is bein done with a jig.

One aspect of having an ideal setup is the reel set to rod butt distance.

How do you measure this length to obtain maximum loading and distance ?

I have my seat's set at arm's leight,,,from the center of the arm pit to the center of my palm minus 2"...conventional set up's.

What is it.
the canal at it's closest is 600 ft.not too many area's that close.the second ur lure hits the water it gets close to the shore from which u cast.I think if guys where overlappin each other buy even 30 ft it would still be hard to near impossible to hook each other.

You will get even better distance if you put a fast 6500 size reel on the longer rods. Try a non levelwind Mag elite on an Allstar 11'9" rod. use about 30 Lb braid and leader appropriate for the weight.. That set up should get you to near 600 feet if you can cast the other mentioned set up (7000size reel with mono on an arra 1322) to 450 feet.

Seriously, 450' is a great cast and if the fish are not 450' or closer to you then so be it. With all the hoopla about new rod blanks made with space age material and the advanced reels and stuff, the best rod I ever had withan 11'6" honey blend lami blank that I cut the top 3" off. Wow did that would load up and let fly a plug that even amazed me. Snapped it in half somewhere that was so long ago I don't remember where.

I can throw a 4 ounce bank sinker 450 feet with a 9 1/2 foot Lami 1213M and an Abu 7000C3,50 lb Power Pro. But I don't think I can throw a Canal jig with pork a lot more than 300 feet, Maybe that's why I get skunked in the canal
