Childrens Fishing Clinic Sachuest Point 9/17

Just wanted to touch base with those of you who were interested in helping out at the Children's Fishing Clinic at Sachuest Point on Saturday Sept 17th 9am to 12 noon.
The following members expressed interest in helping out - please let me know if you're still able to attend: Notaro, Clammer, Throwing Timber, Redlite, RIRockhound.

All gear (rods, reels, bait) is provided by Fish & Wildlife. We generally bring some of our own gear for the "plug casting station". I'll provide old popping plugs for the kids to use. The plug casting station will show the kids various types of plugs and explain their uses and what kind of bait fish they imitate. The kids then get a chance to cast and retrieve them.

The second station is the "bait fishing station" - basically a sinker and scup rig baited and cast and then the kids wait for a bite.

Items needed are sand spikes, snelled scup hooks, 1 and 2 ounce sinkers.
A cutting board for bait. For safety all hook barbs should be crushed.

Volunteers can/should bring your own gear but by know means do we expect you to let the kids use it... but this is the fall and there is a real good possibility that some bass/bluefish will be around so you may get a chance to fish before/after the event. Sachuest Point has all sorts of good surf locations and many a cow has come from there.

After we wrap up maybe we can meet at the SWE and grab a pizza from across the street.

So let me know who's still on and your contact number in case of inclement weather cancellation.

Thanks again.

I plan on being there at 8:30 to set up. When you arrive just say you're a fishing clinic volunteer and someone will golf cart you into the fishing area. We're expecting 18-25 kids. They will be accompanied by an adult/parents so it is probable that we'll be teaching parents also. Just remember to watch their backcast!! Once the kids learn how to cast they almost don't care about catching fish.

redlite can teach the kids how to think outside the box and never get skunked, no matter what.

OK everyone thanks for confirming your participation. The one thing that can change our plans is this tropical storm down south - it is due by some forecasts to go by our area Thursday, Friday or Saturday. Right now the forecasters are saying it will be offshore a couple hundred miles. But IF there is a big storm swell it could postpone the event for safety reasons. Sachuest Point juts out into the open Atlantic and big waves have swept people off the rocks there - it will be Fish & Wildlife"s call with my guidance.
Right now everthing is a go but stay tuned and send me some contact info in case you can't get to this website on Friday.

Notaro: If you're coming from the North take 138 towards Newport take left onto 138A towards beaches, take left at light onto Valley Road (214) and another left another left at light onto Purgatory Road, follow Purgatory Road to Sachuest Point Road (Second Beach will be on your right) at the end of Sachuest Point Road (dead end) is the wildlife refuge.

Hope and looking forward to meeting you all there.

Dennis

just a suggestion, but if the heave is large and there is ample transportation, 3rd beach is very protected from a storm surge and there are quite often a few fish along the shores. Infact thats where i learned to surfcast when i was a wee lad

Nebe,
That is the area where we're planning the clinic - I've contacted Sharon Ware the refuge director and were monitoring the storm. If the swell is too big to safely fish we have a backup plan - that is just to run a casting and hands on clinic at the refuge center, show the kids how to tie rigs, cast some tennis balls on the lawn, etc.
The clinic is part of the overall open house at the refuge - there are many other events planned there on Saturday including guided tours, nature booths, etc.
I'll let everyone know the status on Friday afternoon.
