Recent Trip to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico-report

Just back from Cabo on Sunday night. We fished 4 days on the Fly Hooker.
http://www.flyhooker.com
Day 1 (9/26/2005) We only caught 3 skipjack tuna and a small 12 pound dorado. No pictures from that trip.

Day 2 (9/27/2005) we landed 2 Striped Marlin, including my 1st that I hooked and landed on my own set up-a Shimano TLD 20 with 30 pound test on a Tallus rod and a live bait, and 5 yellowfin tuna, including my biggest to date.

Now I know it is not a great idea to take a billfish out of the water, but it was my 1st ever and I swear this Striper went right back in after a quick picture, was quickly revived and looked good as he swam away. But bash away if you must.

Day 3 (9/29/2005) we were skunked. I fought a Striped Marlin that looked to be around 125 pounds for about 10 minutes but he surfaced, shook his head and threw the lure.

Day 4 (10/3/2005) I caught an estimated 250 pound Blue Marlin that was tagged and released at boatside after a 22 minute fight. We forgot, in the excitement of the whole 1st Marlin thing, to tag the 2 Stripers.

Bad picture of the Blue. My wife was not quite agressive enough to get in there with the camera and I was more concerned with seeing the fish and making sure that tag went in properly. It was an awesome experience catching that fish and watching it swim away.

We ate some great dinners down there too. This was Casa Dorado

Cabo Rey sunset cruise

Great time in Cabo. It was HOT and we saw rain for the 1st time there on 9/30 as a hurricane passed through. The seas were really BIG on 9/26 and 9/27. You may be able to tell from the pictures. We also found 2 great restaurants, Mi Casa and La Casa Country. The Office was great for breakfast on the beach and Manuel and Kiko on the Fly Hooker did a great job for us.

Definately a GREAT trip. We love it there. Great, affordable fishing and cheap beer; a winning combination.

Was George the Captain. He is the owner of the boat but captains a bigger 55' boat. I fished with him in April... Great mate also...

MTC, George is actually Captaining a 50 foot Viking called Senor Moment. It is an AWESOME rig. He and his wife had to sell the Fly Hooker due to some "Mexican" problems but still do the booking and day-to-day operations. A guy in Texas is now the owner. Manuel was, and normally is, the Captain and Kiko was the mate. They are a great team. Juan used to be the mate but as he was the source of the problem, he's out. I would have loved ot fish the Viking but $2,500/day is a bit too rich for my blood.

Hey, the 5th picture is really cool. Looks like you had a blast. My wife and I had our 10th year anniversary this year and we were going to do something like Aruba or Bahamas... it didn't work out for various reasons, but we are going to do it in the next couple years.

I'm now thinkin' Costa Rica or Cabo... I've seen some cool things from there.

Nice pics, thanks for sharing.

I don't mind at all. The Fly Hooker is $450/day, $425/day if you book 2 or more days. That covers the boat, gear, tackle and soda and water. Mary will also arrange for lunch and beer on the boat if you want her to do that. They also offer a few different packages with hotel and ground transport on the web site. I usually take care of all that myself but it is an option. I book directly through their web site via e-mail. The nice thing about that is, if the Fly Hooker is booked, Mary has a little network of other boats she likes with good crews that release all billfish and are willing to let customers fish with their own light tackle as I prefer. Unfortunately, there are still quite a few captains and mates in Cabo that insist on killing billfish and using only broomsticks and 100 pound test line. Personally, I don't want to fish with any of them. The Fly Hooker, and most of the other boats Mary recommends and books for, participate in a the Billfish Foundation tagging program. I'm looking forward to receiving my release certificate in the mail for the Blue Marlin.

				Great Report

		Ed,

Great report, sounds like you had a ball. I may have to try that some time. I will see you in November and look forward to having you aboard RELENTLESS for the fall cod fishing.
