Kippy, the palomar is my favorite knot as well, however, if you fish a shock leader or a fluoro or mono leader when using braid, the palomar uses too much darn line to tie.

In other words, if you retie a couple times, or change lures, you're leader is too short in no time.

I generally tie palomars a couple times, then go back to the improved clinch as my leader shortens.

My advice is to learn a few basic knots at home... a few times thru and they become easy. Also, check in tackle shops... my wife picked me up a little plastic, fold-up thing that shows a bunch of knots for a stocking stuffer at christmas. I kinda laughed, but I use it when I'm tying a knot I don't use all the time. Its small, waterproof, and can fit in any bag or pocket.
