SALMON STOCKING STUFFER

While a broodstock salmon might be a little large for a Christmas stocking, Massachusetts anglers will be able to add "catch a trophy salmon" to their wish list this holiday season. MassWildlife has stocked over 1700 broodstock salmon this fall and early winter. The majority of fish come from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's White River National Fish Hatchery in Vermont and the remainder from MassWildlife's Roger Reed Salmon Hatchery in Palmer. “We were able to stock some fish in November but the most fish will be stocked during December.” reports MassWildlife Chief Fish Culturist Dr. Ken Simmons. "These fish weigh between 4 and 20 pounds, and are all retired from broodstock service.” The salmon will be released into lakes and ponds across the Commonwealth. All MassWildlife Districts will receive an equal number of fish which will be stocked in waters as determined by the District Fisheries Biologist. Once the fish are stocked, an updated list of stocked waters will be posted in the Fishing area of the MassWildlife website: www.mass.gov/masswildlife. Weather conditions permitting, stocking will be complete by the New Year.
