If you're headed to Cutty for the great GB Outdoors/Striped-Bass.Com Striperthon, then you might consider fishing some of the spots I'll be posting. Here's one of them:

It used to be a real site to sit on the Barges and watch the Doctor land his plane on Canapitsit.

I have and hope to many more times. Ox I remember the mate from the Alert going over to the barges and getting some realy nice black fish to take home on the return trip. Looks like the barges are all but gone now? That bunch of rocks in front of the barges was always a last hope place for some of the charter boys if the day had been slow.

nor'easter,

It will be a while before we see the return of that kind of fishing --if ever.

Here's a great e-mail message that was sent to me by Will Barbeau:

Here's the story:

In 1970-72, the East Bay Anglers developed pogey fishing to a high degree, finally using oxygen to transport them overland. We were using 18 foot boats.

Cuttyhunk was still the other side of the moon. A group of four of us hired Jack Reynolds (a charter captain working Cuttyhunk from Westport Harbor) to take us out with live menhaden. Jack's reaction was "why do that? No one does that?" Well, the trip took place. I was one of the four, but had to cancel out at the last minute to go to Alabama to do a Loctite story about the Moonrover.

I flew back the afternoon that they returned from Cutty. They brought to fish to my house and I set up a studio inthe front yard to take this photo.

Left to right: All Lucci, who filled in for me, Bob Greene (standing is Jack Reynolds) #^&#^&#^&#^& Greene and Peter Pockel. The Greenes, Pockel and I were "thick" because we had been fishing tuna in Peter's boat "Sionel" out in Cape Cod Bay for several years.

These fish all weighed more than 50pounds.

Ironically, even as we were instituting this shortcut to butchery,
we were the most active group in striped bass rescue efforts, ultimately leading to Sen Chafee's research bill.

Here's a view of the bass club from a distant rock pile. Why would there be any fish here?

Great story!

Is that the same Bob Greene who writes or wrote for a Chicago newspaper, looks like him? Isn't it amazing how we all thought that there was a neverending suplly of trphy fish?

This was a 20 second exposure at midnight. It was complete lit up by the full moon in October.

Anyone guess what the bright object on the horizon is?

OX and slip,

You got it. The lighthouse on the cliffs at Aquinnah or Gay Head.

One thing Cuttyhunk has that Martha's Vineyard doesn't...a spectacular view of the Gay Head Cliffs at sunset...with Vineyard Sound in the foreground...and ALL those cows at your feet.

You boys should have some fun. Here's a look at the other side of Cuttyhunk and a nice stretch of beach. Another long exposure taken by moonlight.
