Karl, the town IS doing something and the Woods Hole Group, which is known for being on the "tree hugger side" is supporting ORV access and use. Problem is is that unless you are a resident ( good for you) the sticker cost is really going to skyrocket ( bad for me) to cover the expense of buying more land and rebuilding the dune at Pochet etc. Mother Nature could of course come through with a whopper of a Nor'easter a year after all this man-made fix is done and show everybody who's boss.
Read Paul Schnieder's "the enduring shore" and pay attention to the chapter on Chatham and Truro, especially Truro. His explanation of the fluidity of the Cape's land mass is an eye opener. And lastly what is happening to Nauset is natural. It is an evolving event that has a life cycle which repeats itself every 100 years or so. Chatham inlet moves south then connects with Monomoy then disconnects and suddenly all the sand effects currents, add a good storm or two and whammo, the inlet is somewhere abreast of Strong Island.
Can't stop it, you can band aid it but you can't really stop it.
