I've never tried turning Black Locust but it does resist rotting . The telephone company (Ma Bell) used Black Locust to make the wooden spindles that the glass insulators screwed onto .

I think both are kind of stringy and won't turn well. I don't think rotting is a problem.

A black locust fencepost lasts about a week less than a granite one. I think that if you seal your plugs, rot isn't a problem. If they work right , they're pretty much toast after a season anyway.

It'll be hard to stick the paint to locust not sure about tamarack. Locust would make a great bluefish bomb since the paints gonna get destroyed anyways.

Cedar
I use cedar deck railings 1.5x1.5 x 36" from Lowes--cheep$$- I think they should last me and then my boys before the rot away.
