There are three coats that the commercial (and hobby) guys are using. The best, and most popular one, is from a company called Delta (not the paint company you'll find online - this company doesn't have a website) in Florida that sells in HUGE quantities ($500 minimum order!) and doesn't sell small quantities. I'm working with them to see if we can divide them up on our end, but the process is slow because of the warnings associated with the product. They also make the transparent latex wood lure paints that most of the industry is using...but again...the minimum order is very high and they sell the stuff in drums to the commercial boys.
The other popular clear coat is actually Flex Coat (used for rods). There is a tricky way to apply it though so you don't get stroke lines and bubbles.
The other top coat is made by Component Systems (
http://www.csipaint.com) and is called "2-Part Epoxy Top Coat". Mix it on aluminum and then run a lighter under the foil to get the bubbles out. Apply it with a brush and then run it over the lighter again to get the stroke lines out. (Mix in some silver holo glitter before you apply it - the finish is awesome!)
Component Systems is the company that makes all the Pro-Tec powder paints that are used for finishing jigs and spoons.
