It could be from someone unhooking it, I see a lot of people stepping on a Blue fish to unhook it. then throw it back. A boot with cleates or scraped on a rock would probably do some damage.

It was a lot nastier then that. My buddy and i couldnt believe how gross the fish looked. I just grabbed the hook with the pliers and didn't even touch the fish. it was almost a white color. ive never seen anything like it before. if its clammer coming to the cape....im scared.
but seriously, ive never heard of anything affecting bluefish, is there a disease out there or just a solo fish?

Doesn't sound like it (mycobacteriosis). The description sounds like maybe it had an interaction with a net? I haven't heard of any cases of it affecting blues, but it certainly (theoretically) could, especially if the immune system is compromised.

No, no, no. we’re 30… 30, three zero.

The cottage cheese disease...
If that's what it looked like I've seen it on stripers before, usually on holdover fish hanging out near power plants.
