. . . that much I know, but what kind of fisherman?

I know his birthday is coming up and there is much ado regarding this very popular man around this time of the year, but what did he fish for?, or what did he catch?, how did he fish? I wonder.

Was he a shore guy or did he fish from a wooden boat? Was he a bottom guy, did he throw wood or was he a bait fisherman? What kind of fish did he catch? Do you think he shared his most productive spots with the apostles?, did they fish too? Did he have any good fishing buddies and if so, who were they?, or was he a solitary fisherman?

I wonder about these things. Did he handline?, or did he have some sort of pole?, or did he use a net of some sort. I wonder if he was a good fisherman at all, did he catch large or was he happy with catching whatever he caught. I'm sure as the son of God, he might have been able to get some pretty darned good info on spots, migrations or it could have been that there were so many fish around in his time that it was just that easy to catch and so many fish that one could have literally walked accross the backs of them. I'm sure it helped that he could walk on water, imagine all the spots, never mind the access one would have if one could walk on water? After all his time was A.D. and before he was born it was B.C., maybe that stood for Before Catching.

I used to see the Jesus fish on cars, or the symbol back then and wondered what it was all about thinking I would like one since I liked to fish and it was then that someone told me that Jesus was a fisherman. Was he a Rec. or a Comm.?, although I don't think they even had limits or needed permits back in his day.

I do wish Jonah had written more too, I would like more info on what it was like being inside that whale or I'd like to know how Moses was able to part the sea or at least influence the tide but as for Jesus, there are so many things that I'd like to know with regards to the fishing he did but realize that my questions might never have answers. not to get in an a religious discussion, but.....having been raised in Catholic schools and attending a number of religious classes in college, I have never read that Jesus was a fisherman. Being the son of a carpenter, odds are that was his trade too. Many of his Apostles (ex. James the fisherman) were fisherman, and Jesus lived close to the Sea of Galilee. Jesus was referred to as a "fisher of man" to demostrate his spreading of the word of God and attempt to reach mass audiences and save their souls. The "fish" you see on cars is a Christian symbol, used by the followers of Jesus to identify themselves. Remember, Christians were outlaws for hundreds of years. Just my 2 cents.

And I'd like to think Jesus fished....if I remember right he 'caught' a few of his Apostles by burning one of his own spots and telling them where to throw the net.....

he was a savior , they basically have no record of what he was or did from 12 to 30 years old. so really they don't know what he did or was.

At the age of twelve years he went up to Jerusalem to the Passover with his parents. There, in the temple, "in the midst of the doctors," all that heard him were "astonished at his understanding and answers" (Luke 2:41, etc.). Eighteen years pass, of which we have no record beyond this, that he returned to Nazareth and "increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man" (Luke 2:52). He entered on his public ministry when he was about thirty years of age. It is generally reckoned to have extended to about three years. "Each of these years had peculiar features of its own. (1.) The first year may be called the year of obscurity, both because the records of it which we possess are very scanty, and because he seems during it to have been only slowly emerging into public notice. It was spent for the most part in Judea.

(2.) The second year was the year of public favour, during which the country had become thoroughly aware of him; his activity was incessant, and his frame rang through the length and breadth of the land. It was almost wholly passed in Galilee.

(3.) The third was the year of opposition, when the public favour ebbed away. His enemies multiplied and assailed him with more and more pertinacity, and at last he fell a victim to their hatred. The only reliable sources of information regarding the life of Christ on earth are the Gospels, which present in historical detail the words and the work of Christ in so many different aspects.

You might have to order one of the back issues to substantiate this story, but it said in here someplace that Jesus tub trawled codfish off the coast of Maine during his summers for a bit. He was never a surfcaster, or even knew what a striper looked like.

biblical historians believe jesus was likely born in the spring. Not on December 25.

xmas as we celebrate it is a politically timed artificially declared holiday imposed by the vatican to supplant the pagan holiday saturnalia (which marks the winter solstice).

The importance of fish in the Bible is well substantiated. In the Book of Genesis, we find that fish are the first creatures to appear (1:2). They are the only species not taken into the ark, suggesting that they were self-supporting! In Leviticus we read of laws regarding which fish are kosher and which are not.

Descriptions of methods of fishing are given in the Book of Habakkuk: a hook, net and seine are used (1:15). Job sarcastically asks if one can capture a leviathan with a hook (40:25).

In 1 Kings, fish are associated with the wisdom of Solomon (5:13). In the Book of Tobit, Tobiah is told, “Cut the fish open and take out its gall, heart and liver and keep them with you...its gall, heart and liver make useful medicines ” (6:3-7). Later, Tobiah uses the fish gall to remove cataracts from his father’s eyes.

When Jerusalem was rebuilt by Nehemiah after the Babylonian captivity, a Fish Gate was built into its wall (Neh 3:3). Fishermen are mentioned by Jeremiah, when speaking of bringing back the Israelites from Babylon: “Look! I will send many fishermen, says the Lord, to catch them” (16:16). And a large fish prevents Jonah from going on his cruise of the Mediterranean and lands him back where he should have gone in the first place.

Jesus preached in terms of fishing, almost echoing Jeremiah when he says to Peter and the other fishermen: “From now on you will be catching men” (Lk 5:11). Two miraculous catches of fish are related in Luke 5:1-11 and John 21:1-8). All of the gospel writers attest that he fed thousands with fish and bread. He compares the kingdom of heaven to a dragnet (Mt 13:47-48). He paid taxes with a coin found in the mouth of a fish (Mt 17:27). Jesus is depicted as preaching from fishing boats and sailing in fishing boats. The crowds that followed him carried bread and fish (Mk 6:35-40). The hungry asked for fish (Lk 11:1). Jesus was given fish to eat after his resurrection in Jerusalem (Lk 24:42), and he cooked fish for his disciples on the shore of the Sea of Galilee (Jn 21:9). He traveled to and from places in the company of fishermen. And, most importantly, Jesus choose fishermen for the important job of spreading his word and building his church.

Three guys were fishing in a lake one day, when Jesus walked across the water and joined them in the boat. When the three astonished men had settled down enough to speak, the first guy asked humbly, "Jesus, I've suffered from back pain ever since I took shrapnel in the Vietnam War. Could you help me?"

"Of course, my son," Jesus said. And, when he touched the man's back he felt relief for the first time in years.

The second guy who wore very thick glasses and had a hard time reading and driving , asked if Jesus could do anything about his poor eyesight. Jesus smiled, removed the man's glasses and tossed them into the lake. When they hit the water, the man's eyes cleared and he could see everything distinctly.

When Jesus turned to the third guy, the guy put his hands out defensively. "Don't touch me!" he cried. "I'm on a disability pension."

I don't beleive Jesus was a fisherman. Some of Jesus's apostles where fisherman and there is a reason for that. Most fisherman in general are men of faith, we(they too) stay out wee hours of the night hoping for that big bite.... night after night after night. Merry Christmas
