Best Rod 10-11 foot rod for Pencils (non glass)
Am I correct in thinking that the GSB 1201L would be the best choice for fishing pencils in the 2-2.5 Oz. range?
Opinions????????

I should clarify! 11 footer is just not necessary! Not for pencils! Depending on conditions I use a Lami 1205 around the boulders on Cuttyhunk and similar areas.....a 1083 Lami spinner alot also.....or a 1081 or 1084 conventional in sandy less rocky spots!
1201L should be ok!

I already have an All Star 1088 and also have a lami 1081 mh on the way from Saltheart. I don't like the ALL Star because it's a little fast form pencils IMO. I'll see how I like the Lami.

Very unlikely that I would ever get an 11 footer. I don't even know if I have a place to store one. Just curious to hear opinions. Wondered if alot the gsb 1321 was a popular choice.

I hear the Lami 1205 is the best bet for pencils ... but I cannot claim due to experience with the rod, as I don't have one of those yet, but will have one for Cutty, etc.

I like the 1201m but wanted something a little lighter. The 1201m is perfect for 3 oz. pencils IMO.

we've talked about this before but i really don't think that you'll find the 1201L to be that much better for pencils than your 1204 but your welcome to test the two side by side - maybe casting and comparing before TFCTFN next weekend? a 1201L with bigger guides than I have on mine might make for a whippier rod and one you'd be more happy with but sizing guides for action is well beyond me - i just know that it has an impact and bigger and heavier guides = whippier rod.
you tend to use more rod action with pencils than I do though so for you the difference between the 1201L and 1204 may make a bigger difference than I think it will.

My personal favorite (excluding glass) is a Lami Ron Arra 1322 in either spinning or conventional. But then again I tend to like throwing pencils in the 3 oz range.

DZ runs a cut back (at the tip) 1201L. Maybe that's an option if the 1201L in stock form is a little too light for you when casting?

This is my favorite also..Second would be the gsb 1321 1M.
I wear the rod off my hip so it's not a hassle to use.The longer rods by nature have a action that pencils love..
An they will smoke the hell out of a 2.5 on the cast.Although like Mac I prefer em in the 3 oz range..Something to think about when u really need to reach out an touch some fish..
Fishing time is one of the most valuable things to me.Why run the risk of being undergunned..

I've got the 1321L cut back 4" so it's closer to the M. It's a spinner with a fat cork foregrip so I can just hold the rod above the reel if I need to.
Got a bit of flex but it's faster obviously than stock. It will throw a 2-2.5 ounce pencil as far as anything. Great for biiiiggg eels too

1322 by far is my favorite rod. I am 6'6'' and can launch pencils half way to the moon. when I reel in the pencil the paint is soft and gooey from reentry into atmosphere.
the scary thing is that when I throw a night-n-gale it comes back burnt and the man on the moon blinks when the lure hits his eye.
Great rod and the power of the rod is perfect for me.

I like the glass. If u don't mind a heavy rod an one that cast crappily.it'll serve ya well.I don't think there is a better stick to have once u hook a fish. The 1322 is close.U don't really have to worry with the glass about nicks an breakage.I used to use one quite a bit my biggest jig fish is on the glass.I was convinced at one time that the slow action of the glass gave the jig a nice lift offa the bottom.
That same slow action makes em cast poorly imo.U have to wait for the rod too load. That translates into not pushing forward as hard.. it's different than a graphite rod.Kinda like a wet noodle.

Here on LI, the two most popular are probably the GSB 1321M and Arra 1322.

you have to decide what length you really want, 10' or 11'. you have several options in each length. for the lure range you are looking for, 2 - 2.5 oz, the gsb1201L would be perfect. i have one i've used for years for that exact purpose and that's almost why i still own it. i've throw pencils from 1.5 oz to 3.25 oz with it, but from 2 3/4 up is starting to push the limits of the blank. if you plan on throwing 2.5 - 3.5 ounce pencils, go with the gsb1201M. i would not suggest the 1205 for pencils as it is too fast in action. however, it can be used effectively for spook-type lures.
for 11' models the gsb1321L and xra1321 are great up to the same lure range 2.5 ounce. if you are throwing 2.5 - 3 ounce pencils, go with the xra1322 or gsb1321M.
if you really want a 9' model, which may be more difficult to work a pencil effectively, you could use the gsb1081m.

Anyone try any of the UK rods like the Conoflex Flattie Fanatic or the Anyfish Anywhere Surfrod. These rods are unique in that they have a soft tip but very powerfull butt sections. I think this would be a perfect match for throwing pencils. I've tried the Anyfish Anywhere Surfrod and now have one in my arsenal. The great thing about the Surfrod was that it was so easy to work a popper with becuase of the soft tip. Mike at M&D's will have a few of the Anyfish Anywhere rods for those that want to try them out soon.

Best pure pencil popper blank ever made, bar none:
glass Lami 1164, later called the SB 136 2F.

What do u use for a ten foot rod now??
If I had to have a pencil rod in a ten fter I would take 12"s off the butt of a xra 1322..
