I know what you mean about Rowan. I can't savor books like that either...I gulp them down in a night or two as well. (I also agree with you, the exposed psyche of the surfcaster overrides the purist issues. A lot of fly fishing books are like that and that is why I don't enjoy them as much...Fly fishing is not the *only* fishing method...they should try wire lining in the race. )
My favorite outdoor writer is Frank Wollner , some of his early SWS articles about surfcasting were fantastic. I think I also have an old Gray's Sporting J. where he told about a surfcasting trip on Nantucket in Nov. I love to read that when I am hunkered down on BI when it is blowing 40 with a glass of Yukon Jack. I read my kids bedtime stories from Wollners' "My New England” now and then (with hot-cocoa).
I am looking forward to Posts' book...but I have to wait until we head north after Xmas to read it.
