Just remember (and this is one thing that trips alot of people up)
You have to fuel the thing...It does absolutely NO good to buy a huge generator and not be able to fuel it...some only run for a few hours on a fillup....some are HUUUUUGE gas guzzlers.
Make sure you have a plan for fuel in place, running down to the local gas station to refill ONE jerry can won't work if you have to run for multiple days.
My dad lost power for 5 days last winter due to that big ice storm in Maine. Since he's on a road with not alot of people on it in the winter they were left waiting for quite a while before the power company came to fix their part of the lines that were down.
