After ruining my supposedly waterproof camera {with 3 of my 4 biggest fish this season on it} I think it is time to invest in a good quality camera. What are some good, surf worthy, camera's?

One of the point and shoot Canons IN a Canon waterproof case.

It's not compact but it's tough and it works.

What was the make and model number of the camera was it that was supposedly waterproof? And sounds like its worth sending it in to the company for a complaint and a refund.

It was an older Olympus, it was past its prime anyway. Just curious what people use, I see alot of great pictures taken from the surf.

pentax optio w30 works good for me. not really tough, but its survived a few droppings but I wouldn't expect it the take constant abuse. I keep it in my chest pocket on a lanyard. waterresistant - rated for hours at up to 20' deep I think.

i jsut use my regular camera (its an old clunker any way) or the one on my phone.. its risky buisiness.. if you are out there..

just get an old cheap one. $50 or so. something you are willing to risk losing to the water. that plastic bag idea is a good one too if you plan on chest highs all night.

I have a pentax optio waterproof. It takes decent pics and is supposed to be fully submersible, read the specs. That being said, the Canon Powershot, while not at all waterproof, so far seems to complete smoke the Optio in terms of the quality of the pictures it takes, as well as in terms of a good user interface that is logical, makes sense, and easy to use.

I've been able to match up identical shots taken with both cameras, and the difference is noticeable...as a final note, I don't work in the camera business. So no spam here.

A few shots from last night. Keep in mind the lighting is even less then it appears. Some shots were a little blurry, but at that hour you have to expect that. This is an Canon SD750 shooting from inside the Canon waterproof case. I'm a big fan of that little camera. In the case it is submersible to something like 100 feet and it's more then passed the test in the conditions most fisherman will expose it too.

Pete that first shot should be on a damn book cover man! Came out nice.I have no pics because I catch no keepers but when I do it will be with a disposable.Who would have ever thought Surf fishing would be such an expensive hobby ?

Obviously this is ok for regular picture taking - if you're like Pete and swim to your rock, then this isn't the camera for you. FYI - just check out HPD's posts because they are truly impressive.

Yup, those are the kind of beauteous Canon shots that have been absolutely smoking my Optio. I am not sure what it is exactly about the Canon's, but I think its that they have a superior metering system inside them that nails every pic right on the head. Awesome stuff.

I have the Olympus 770 waterproof model... I love the thing... I did the research and chose this one simply due to the fact it is completely waterproof, crush proof (up to 250lbs) and withstands the cold pretty well... The picture quality is above par, for point and shoots. The coolest feature is to take shots under water... Im at work so I don't have any pictures here but I will repost... I got the cam at circuit city in June, I purchased online one day and picked up at a local store for like $278... they were having a Digi camera sale so It was well below street price.

Although the other options are good... the fact you don't need a water proof casing for it... won me over... and I treat the thing like my Van Staal and it still works like a champ.
