first time - Striper Talk Striped Bass Fishing, Surfcasting, Boating

first message from a long time sandbagger. I regularly visit this site during striper season, but now that I am a fishing addict (always was just didnt know it) I have to register. I just want to say thanks for the info all year long, it helped me with a very respectable season. I am a shore only fisherman, live in Fairhaven ma. and fish mostly around priest cove. Somtimes I can see blitzing stripers and blues from the window of my living room! I truly respect other fisherman and the time we put in to get results. I fish just about every day March thru November In what I have heard called skinny water, I call it the shoals, but take most stripers in 3-10 feet of water. I have fished regularly for 15 years and know my area very well. Thanks again!

Thanks, I am sure I will. A question for ya. I fish mostly artificials, poppers mostly, don't have much luck with swimmers, spoons or plastic type lures. Is it the shallow water (my theory) or somthing else? Poppers have been deadly for me this year.

Of course what Ragfly doesn't mention is that with recovery, you get to fish even more...

Have you tried any soft plastics? GS makes some horizontally weighted jerk baits which are deadly almost everywhere I've seen them used - also good in skinny water...

I will give them a cast or two next season, but to me there is nothing like watching a striper hit a popper! I read what you guys are doing and I want to try it, but always fall back to what works for me. It leaves me wondering if I could do better with different lures. Thanks again for the info.

Lenny - that's the nice thing, you can go right back to what you are comfortable with if the "New Thing" doesn't work for you...

But in those bait rich clear waters over there, lots of good stuff to try.

Bait rich for sure! I feel I live in the best fishing spot in the world. Stripers, blues, weaks, flounder, tog , 50 yards from home!
By the way I have sandbagged many sites, but joined only one. This one is by far the most helpful. I have read this site is funded by users, thru raffles and the like. I will help out when I can.

Welcome aboerd lenny, good to hear you are a fellow addict and it seems you do well in the catching dept.

Poppers eh? I guess you do alot of daytime fishing? You might try some Beachmaster dannys as well as those jerkbaits. Nothing wrong with catching fish on poppers though. Have you ever tried a Pikie?

That area you fish is heaven, no wonder you know it well, no reason to go elsewhere.

You'll find that once you start contributing (as in posting a simple "hello" now and then) you'll enjoy this site even more.

Now a few words on poppers:

Most people (including myself) Love to see an actual strike, and what better way to see a fish hit a lure than with a popper

The explosion coming from underneath or from just behind.. is INCREDIBLE!!! A miss is almost as good as a strike...the rush you get is hard to describe in words...(almost I said)

I think thats the main reason you stick to popping, its the type of fishing that even when the fish are not hitting...you still feel like your doing something productive. I know that I used to feel that a popper would wake up a sleeping fish..and although it may entice some, it will definately scare away others. Learn to diversify your fishing tactics. A whole new world will open up, and so will your wallet

...but you only come around once, so make the most out of it. Join one of our get-togethers, you'll have a blast...and maybe I can weasel some FH info from ya...

Hey Lenny.......If you like poppin', try the Habs pink(squid) popper. Theres something about that popper that makes bass torpedo out of the water, vicious hits. It never came off my popping rod last season(except to change the leader).

Welcome Lenny. You most be a great fisherman to catch fish here because there are no fish in Fairhaven waters so there is no need for any of you guys or gals to come down this way

There are no fish in any of the other area towns either just ask GS. So Please don't waste your time by fishing any where on the south shore of Mass.

BY the way Lenny I am also from Fairhaven and love the area, we will have to get together for some boat fishing if you wish but I don,t catch all that many fish but I did hook onto four fishermen out off West Island this fall.

Fairhaven is a great place to live! I used to live there myself!

I love the fishing down that way!

West Island was one of my favorite spots!...
