I don't have a problem with questions, just stupid questions. if someone wants to know how to tie a dropper loop, fine, that's a tough knot to tie correctly and not something you will find easily.
When they start asking what rod to buy and what reel to put on it, I respectfully submit that they should do some research on their own. Those questions have been answered 100 time.
Yes, the Board is hear to share knowledge but there is also a line where the majority of the population is not being served by the questions asked by a few. Just my opinion.

Paul, I think an honest answer is that "we" the community of people who fish serioulsy have made this whole thing way more complicated than it needs to be. I've been surf fishing since I was 7 or 8, I fished Ctown, Quonny, Race Point etc with a bag of plugs, a Quick reel and an off the shelf rod. Luckily I had a Dad who had gear and knowledge and I followed him, but back then, 30 years ago, I never heard of Van Staal, Aquaskins, $240 pliers, beathable waders, etc.
We fished with our plugs in a good ole white bucket, and wore $5 rain jackets, 3 rebels and a few jigs. Now look at all the choices a newbie has? I wouldnt no where to start! If you go with all the options it would cost you $3500 just to get the basic equipment. There is too much bs. That doesnt explain dumb questions, but I think information overload is a factor!

Well, Jimmy, that a good point. I started like you did. White bucket a set of rubber waders from Bennys and a $5 rain jacket. You had white leadheads jigs and maybe an Atom Popper and a Rebel.
I am not criticizing the questions. Just as Bill said, you can do the searches and find out the basics to start with. I don't have a problem with questions that are thoughtful and not easily solved. It's the redundent, "what line should I use" questions that I take exception to.
Do you see where I am coming from?

They have made it that way because thats what they like...
I have seen the guys you talk about...Many times, they look like idiots...Dressed to the nines with every brand name everything, spent thousands before they caught there first fish or think they fish better because somone else tells them to buy this wetsuit , wear a belt full of boga grips, pliers, hand held radios, red necklights etc, vs reels, portable borometers etc...they look like fools out of ice station zebra! They are at total war with fish! he men who have the latest and greatest of what they were told to buy! yet they have no clue what the wind is doing...oops, Forgot that one!
Then the guy walks off the beach in hip boots and grundens hauling a 40 over his shoulder! Its hilarious..
These guys dont even want to touch a fish anymore! Now a boga grip is the way to land a fish! They do all of this mind you to match wits with an animal that has a brain the size of a pin head..and all that lame gear is needed to partake in this battle of real men. They exole themselves of how "hard" they fished all night to land that bass....how reaching for the boga almost had them lose ballance while they waded out 6 million yards to climb up on a rock like a baffoon to master the beast..(buying a boat is smarter in this case and can acually prolong life, but thats another story)
here is whats next...Soon there will be another gadget for there lame looking belts full of all that useless gear...It will be a med kit for fish...It will have anit-biotic shots to give the fish to treat a host of illness's they may have, they may contain narcotics to lesson the pain and suffering they caused on the fish along with this portable oxygen to get there fish back in good shape...
When you meet these people they walk around like they are holding this huge secret and you cant dare ask where they caught there large bass....Gimmie a break, as for me I could give a good cheet where anyone catches, let alone some wet behind the ears kid thinking he has pulled the wool over the eyes of a guy who has done it a million times...They dont talk, they just smirk, the whispers begin, "hey did you hear how good those guys did those two weeks in August" wow there sharpies..They have all that gear you know, they know what there doing...
Fishing is not that complicated...its all a matter of putting in the time

You forgot the short handled gaff they seem to love to wear, when they're either a) standing in the wash, or b) perched on a rock 10' above the water. a) where the gaff isn't needed and b) where it's utterly useless

Mike, I never used a gaff on the beach in my life..always gilled my fish, I have seen more guys gaff themselves than fish..
It really is about aparences these days...Better to look good than to know how to fish...Just totally backwards from the way I learned..I love the guys who did so good last season and now they are instant sharpies because they caught some fish....it never ends
Man you can even self-publish your own book nowadays and become a ledgend! Its truley amazing what has happened to this sport we all love....The basics and true friendships are gone, the shops you spoke of where coffe was served near a fire are things I miss very much....It is truly stunning when you really take the time to look at it...Surf fishing has become a fad..the in thing to do...But for all the wrong reasons

Ah yeeeess! Ignorance is BLISS, eh SS ?
Don't own Bogas, a dry top, no gaff, i caught me first twenty or so keepers on a wally world spinning combo, no gps/cell/camera/monitor gadget, no walkie-talkie, and i fish with PENN reels; incase you were wondering ?
Don't plan on publishing any books anytime soon, at least not any how-to's about surfcasting....................i'm more into writing children's books and the *fishing fantasy genre* ~*you know, "the one that got away" type stuff and "stand here, cast there" "even YOU can be a sharpie" type of chit*

YUP! guilty as photoed!
that is me and my pb 30" booo from last fall,
notice the hodgman's waders ($25 on sale the year before at #^^^^&'s), and my torn and tattered Carhart subzero coat (no drytop $$$$, yet). was gonna release it until this hombre asks if he could keep it. okay, i tell him, it's yours iff you'll snap my pic. small price to pay i thought.
that was a FUN catch, workin it thru the wash and around the reefs.
i'd prolly target boooooos more, if they could all be that big or bigger .
don't have much use for the little ones.
the dots in the sky are what happens when yer throwaway Kodak gets soaked more than once during the course of a season. that was also snapped for Skitterpop's benefit. wanted to show him *my bluefeesh weilding expertise*. that is from where you obtained that pic, no?
