Darkness, wind, tide but I value just being able to go above all the aforementioned.

Water level or tide. My high tide spots are dried out at low tide. From there, experience or historical perspective.
There are guys out there with "fish sense" who can tell where the fish will be, if you look close, you'd probably find a lateral line on them someplace. I'm not one of those guys. Iron Mike, Stevie, Tony Steztco - they feel the need to go to a certain place at a certain time.
Migration is tougher than residency, but being among the many, I'll take the percentages and fish the fall spots during the fall, under conditions that have produced before, over my hunches - because my hunches are not as good as other people's. There's a maturation process that we go through when we recognize who we are and who we are not.

After giving up boat fishin 2 seasons ago and finally taking the time to fish locally hard on all tides, winds and moons, I have narrowed this year down to about 12 spots that I have learned and figured out with pretty good results.\. As The Apprentice will tell ya'll, I live and die by the tides and WIND. Where I fish changes each night based upon where the tide is gonna be right for which spot (incomin; out goin) and most importantly, which spot will be fishable with eels that nights particular WIND. The distant 3rd is the moon. If it is bright, I fish my 3 deeeeep water spots. darka and I fish shallow areas. The canal is another story. As Back Beach has taught me the ways of the Eldridge Tide Book, As It is all about how strong \big the tides are. The bigger the faster the current, the better the eelin.
All this and still I figure each night where I am goin, show up, conditions are PERFECT (by fisherman standards) and the fish ain't there...........Lady Luck is the most important factor........

I don't keep a log in the general sense, but I know, from the years of doing this thing we do, that some areas in the Fall will be more productive than say mid season.
