				RI Toll Road Proposal!!!

PROVIDENCE — Driving your car may take on a new and larger meaning — for your wallet.

To fix its crumbling roads and bridges and rescue the state’s financially challenged public transit system, a draft report made public yesterday says the state should consider charging tolls at the state line on every interstate highway and creating a new tax for each mile a vehicle is driven.

 | So how many East Bay residents drive into work via Mass? I know my wife does.

Not to mention the burden this would put on the working man who has to commute to a jobsite.

I guess the state thought their taxes on 4 dollar gas would go on forever?

				 | That hurts, I drive to RI to work and fish, nevermind that I already pay a ton in RI income taxes and dont live there, now I have to pay tolls too?

Growing up in CT, there were tolls all over the place. Looks like things are starting to look more and more like the 70s. Better start growing the sideburns out.

				 | The toll boths cost a fortune in lost fuel , lost time , lost lives (the toll boths have been the scene of many fatal accidents). All these costs are above and beyond the straight forward face value of paying the tolls.
Pay a per mile fee to the state for driving? They must be nuts!

RI will soon become a place that people avoid while traveling and people move away from wherever possible.

Oh well , moving that 400 yards to MA won't be that hard physically , just a sentimental loss to be forced from the state I was born in.

				 | I'm in the same boat as Jimmy. I live in Mass but travel to Providence for work everyday. At least they can't put tolls up on all the side streets leading into and out of the state. I'll avoid the tolls, but it'll still be a pain in the backside. I need to keep all my dollar bills for the "performing arts" in RI. |

I don't have a problem with one at each end of 95 like other states.. (Drive from RI south to NC and see how many tolls you hit)

Otherwise it is just Carcerri et all going nuts... without raising income taxes of course.... |

bad place.
95 in westerly?
Maybe...
less commuters, mainly tourists and travellers...
less of an issue there IMHO.

Not in favor though overall, just RI being RI... |

				 | Like the state is so huge no one will ever think about driving around it? 395 to 84 or 86? All those people who commute from Westerly to Groton/New London will be so pleased. |

If the mileage tax happens that will be the most ridiculous thing ever. We already have high gasoline taxes, high registration fees, and property taxes on cars(which a lot of states don't). It is a very nice place to live but it is very expensive. I don't know the numbers but I have heard that people have been leaving RI and I think that will continue. |

495>Mass Pike>84>684>Hutch>Whitestone, only takes about 25 minutes more than 195>95>Throggs Neck when traffic isn't an issue. And how many times is that the case with 95 through CT and NY?

Plus it's much better road. 95 in CT and NY is a freaking disaster. |

				 | People should go to the state house with dozens and dozens of eggs and throw them at the politicians as they walk out.
 I'm in, how about you.

 | Traffic is always an issue on I95 in CT south of New Haven and in NY. I usually cross over and take the Pkwy once I get last New Haven. Exit 38 is a connector between the Pkwy and I95. |

 | The Pike-84-684 (if going to NJ then Tappan Zee) is the only way I will drive to NY or anywhere farther south. 95 thru the Bronx is hell. Its the worst stretch of interstate I've seen in my life... well 295 thru DC is pretty bad but not because of traffic, but because of 8 foot wide lanes, a maze of jersey barriers and no shoulder. |

WTF are the voters in RI STOOPID???????????

Governer can't do anything, all the power is in the legislature and they ignored the voice of the voters 3 elections ago when we overwhelmingly passed a separation of powers referendum... |
