The Hidden Costs and Afflictions of Working Alone

This summer, because I did not drive enough over the last few years, my tires got dry rot and had to be replaced.
Now, because I speak so little, at night when my family comes around my voice is all froggy like I just woke up.

Go do more Q&A articles with surf legends where you have to talk and use your car.

That's funny.

Not that I've bought anything from you in a while (too be fair, I do have 5-8 years worth of gear at current attrition rates) I do seem to remember every time I'd stop by, that you'd be in some sweats and it was like I had just woken you up.

I'm going to do more articles - and I'm going to do my own book, I did like doing the q&a articles.
I'm not kidding about my voice - when I read to my son at night I'm constantly clearing my throat.
Also, I'm taking note of the life exectantcy of people in the tackle business - its not good - that's why I want to focus more on the tee shirts and publishing.
I saw this show on PBS about writers and their creative processes. One person, it might have been Toni Morrison, she gets up, dresses like she was going to a professional job, and then goes into an office in her home and works a full day. I found that hard to believe.
I can tell you this, there's no way I'm setting up a live cam so you can see what goes on here like other shops are doing. I can't let people see that - somedays I start to act like the Dennis Hopper character in Apocalypse Now. People see the crazy stuff and they'll never want to give me thier credit card numbers.

Whose going to be the one to set them straight, Man?
Me? Look at me Man! Wrong!

that's why on TV they have commercials .....station identification... so you occasionally switch to a looped version of the surf... then behind the scenes you can get all freaky for a time ....get it out of your system .....and then return to the task...

I have the opposite issue with my voice. I talk on the phone 5-6 hours a day.

When I get home I am not interested in talking to anyone. I pet the dogs- nod my head about 62 times agreeing with my wife during the wife nightly complaint session. Eat by myself since everyone else ate- 2 hours before--go on the computer to check the striper world and SRI. And I still have not said anything to anyone- then finally with great effort and every fiber of my being- I say- "Matt I would greatly appreciate it if you would not flunk out of AP Physics and AP Statistics". Then I go to sleep.

After having worked out of our home for a number of years I know what you're talking about - after a while you do start to develop house rot from not having to go out and interact with other people - or shave...or shower...or change out of your favorite sweats...pretty soon you start to look like a shipwreck survivor -

After we closed the biz both me and my wife got outside jobs working for other people - and after 6 months I find myself closing my eyes and clicking my heels...there's no place like home....

I've got another thing cooking here and I'm gonna put it on the front burner and turn the heat up to high pretty soon - after the holidays, it looks like. Can't wait to get rolling on it...I found I really miss my wife, my dogs, my own music and my own schedule. I'm too damned independent to work for anyone else anymore and have been for a long time.

Almost sounds too simple to work but just do something unrelated to your usual gig, even if it's just an excursion with your young'un - you'll both enjoy it, I know, getting out and about.

Hey, he struck me as a real good kid when I met him, so I know he'll take pity on poor old Pop...

"There is no royal road to this heavy surf-fishing. With all the appliances for comfort experience can suggest, there is a certain amount of hard work to be done and exposure to be bourne as a part of the price of success." From "Striped Bass," Scribner's Magazine, 1881.

I was watching the X-Files movie the other night, Mulder was in his office looking all squirrelly and Scully tells him, "I'm worried about the effect long-term isolation is having on you."

My wife looks over and says, "He's you."

Ahh....you know, when I worked with people and socialized with them, they really did not add any value to my life anyway. I make it out to be more than it is, I'm five-plus years into it - I think if I was really going to lose my mind it would have happened by now.

I'm probably going to take a course in web design in January.

I can imagine how that class would go.

it's true. i can attest to this, i've seen it first hand. it started with Food Cat, then Joe's mental state progressively worsened over time. Joe, when i go back to school for Psych in Jan, I may have to observe your behavior for my abnormal psychology research class. your "situation" looks like a textbook psychological case study, AKA an easy "A" for me. take it slow and easy my man....
