I think the bottom line is that most spots are not that secret and even if a spot is "shut down" during the day, 90% of the time you can go back in the deep night without any problems (most of my favorite spots are like this actually). For example, at a UDL, a grumpy homeowner likes to yell at you, but when you go back when he's a asleep, no problem!

Like Mike said, magazines have been doing this as long as poeple have been fishing. If you are that concerned, you are better off going to a boat or kayak. In fact, the pioneers of kayak fishing up around my parts are almost all surfcasters that got fed up with the trash and the craziness that ensues at a lot of spots. You can buy a nice kayak for the price of a van stall, so its not like its that out of reach.
