...Ross, just enough mono to cover the core (no holidays though). You want to go with 15-17# mono. The thinner diameter will give you a better grip for the braid. With thicker monos, some braids may part the fibers and find their way to the spool's core, and if enough of them do...the spinning may still occur, you DON'T want to find that out on a fish of a life-time. The mono works as a spool "grip". As the braid tightens up on the mono, it will squeeze the mono to the spool core instead of just tightening up on the bare core, and spinning away on you.
