My intentions were to see if anyone knew how to get the practice of put the sinks inside the restroom changed to the outside, some sort of design/code type change. It's all Barry's fault I find myself looking everywhere for change but there doesn't seem to be any.

write your congressman and get a bill passed that will fund a study on how to get that done and if it needs to be done, to spend our tax money and stimulate the economy and in the end no conclusion will happen because by the time the study about the subject is complete our government will be broke and bankrupt.

I emailed the CDC and got back what I would consider form letter info. It would appear they didn't even read my short message:

Sent: 1/22/2010 12:20:42 PM
To: cdcinfo@cdc.gov
Subject: A possible way to reduce the spread of disease

I would like the sinks for restrooms put outside of the restrooms. I think if everyone handles a door they think is dirty (it is) they will wash their hands.

Benefits:

Less floorspace needed for sinks (both men and women use the same sink).
People would be in the view of other so they would be more likely to wash.(employees must wash)
Less cost because there would be less sickness because of more hand washing.
Less paper towel waste because you wouldn't need the extra piece to open the door.
Less paper towel on the floor because people would be in view of everyone.
The only people I could see being against this would be the people who don't wash now.

What do you think?
How do I go about making this happen?

Their reply:

Thank you for your inquiry to CDC-INFO. In response to your request for information on how the flu virus is spread, related to the current H1N1 flu outbreak, we are pleased to provide you with the following information and resources.

The spread of 2009 H1N1 virus is thought to happen in the same way that seasonal influenza (flu) spreads within homes or communities. Flu viruses are spread mainly from person to person through coughing or sneezing by people who are sick with flu. People may become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it, and then touching their mouth or nose before washing their hands.

This H1N1 flu virus is new. Scientific research is being conducted to better understand its characteristics. Because this is a situation that is rapidly changing with new information available, please visit the CDC website CDC 2009 H1N1 Flu where you will find the latest updates posted daily.

Keeping hands clean is 1 of the best ways to prevent the spread of flu (influenza) in a business setting. Washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds (the time it takes to sing "Happy Birthday" twice) is the best way to keep your hands from spreading a virus. Be sure to wash both sides of the hands, between fingers and under the nails.

If you can't wash your hands with soap and water:
* Alcohol-based hand cleaners containing at least 60 percent alcohol can be used. After applying, rub hands until dry. However, hand rubs should not be used when hands are visibly soiled.
* If you don't have an alcohol-based hand rub, other hand cleaners (that don't have alcohol in them) may kill flu germs on hands. However, there isn't as much information about whether these types of hand cleaners are effective.

Until you are able to get vaccinated, the best way to help fight 2009 H1N1 influenza (flu) is to cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, then throw the tissue away. Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Stay home if you're sick, and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.

I am afraid that my lack of a college education has put me at a disadvantage because I cannot properly communicate with others. It doesn't even seem as though they read it. I would have at least replied back with a simple:
We will look into the idea.
Thank you, CDC

It's nice to be able to wrap people up as exaggerated stereotypes that never really existed outside of TV Land....Makes dealing with them easier.

for the record I AM a hand washer but I for one would NOT want to wash my hands in the same sink that all men and women have now used......you guys pull out the deal and then turn the faucet on? Now I have to turn on the same faucet? Its like I just touched mr> wiggles. Granted I am then washing my hands, sorry no offense, but still no thanks!

I will take my chances on washing and then having to touch the door handle.

If its so bad to you why dont you carry one of those little bottles of hand sanitizer with you?

Simplify.......

I spent a lot of years doing janitorial work and I can tell you from first hand experience the things women pull out in the ladies room that are far worse then what a man might be handling. Plus when it comes to filthy restrooms the womans is the worst hands down, it isn't even a competition, let me just say men don't hover. Plus you don't even want to handle the faucet after a guy ...Why?
I'm not saying "it's so bad" as you put it I am simply saying if more people would wash their hands then we would all be better off. People seem to just look at this has some germaphobic type issue, I'm not a germaphobe I simply find it RUDE AND IGNORANT when people don't wash their hands.

Funny, when I read Jenn's post I was going to post the same thing.....I was a janitor for a couple years back in and after high School....Women's room were the worst.

hmm...maybe I am way off on this one, or maybe the "woman" stuff is "acceptable risk" to me. Either way men and womens using the same sink makes for twice the amount of people slobering their germs in one place, no?

I wash 'em...but I'll be damned if I have to be monitored to prove it.

why don't they just put cameras in the stalls just to make sure we wipe our arse.....thats basic Hygene too.....

For someone so paranoid about the bathroom door handle, have you ever had takout.....enjoy....because you have no idea do you.

I worked with a guy that used to be ultra paranoid about germs and cold....he's always be spraying his lysol and as soon as the temps got down to 70 he's putting on his long johns.....guy was always sick.

Me.....I never worried about the whole uber germ exposure.....I wear short sleeves year round, never get a flu shot.....the 7 years I worked there i missed one day of work....I'll stick to my way of doing things, Thank You

The whole point was the spread of germs and if people will just wash their hands more then there will be less illness simple. Am I wrong about hand washing? I was a janitor for about 10 years so if I was any kind of germaphobic type person I never could have done that. Cameras in the stalls read your signature it covers that idea.
And the take out food come on I was a part time bus boy when I was a teenager so I know and I also drink from soda cans that maybe a rat walked across you are missing the point.

Not missing the point at all......you stated having cameras watching you wash your hands....correct. I think that is rediculous......that was my stand on that statement.

it has nothing to do with hand washing...it has everything to do with my privacy.

YOU are the one that turned it around in to me not washing my hands and made it a hand washing issue..

I was also a Janitor for 3 years and I was in the Navy for 7.....probably washed just as many toilets as you in that 7 year span. I was also a dishwasher and and worked for a catering company and saw what goes on there too....

anybody else feel strongly about people viewing and recording their personal cleaning habits?

Whether a person washes his/her hands is not a personal privacy issue it has an effect on the public therefore I see no harm in people possibly being observed when doing so. Why would a person not want anyone to see them wash their hands? Do you wait until there is no one in the restroom before you wash yours or is this just the slippery slope type of reasoning?

Nice guys, label me then bail rather than admit that it was you guys that dragged this thread to the point of absurdity. I ask a simple question and you felt you had to challenge the idea so I defend my idea but you persist in throwing out opinions until it is me that looks bad.

Thumbs up Thanks for the bumps

Neither, animals don't wash their hands.

Although it may appear as though I have gotten no closer to seeing some sort of change I have at least planted the idea in a few peoples minds which might eventually lead to it's fuition.
