My truck has 4X and I love it!
I only rely on it for traction to get moving, and for a little added control while driving, but I know that 4X drive will do nothing to help you stop.
I scratch my head when I see and hear people talk like that woman, thinking that 4X drive can do EVERYTHING. Do these people really understand their vehicles? I think not.
One thing I stress with friends and family when discussing my/our vehicles is that you have to fully understand your vehicles limitations under adverse conditions. There are times when I won't drive because the risk is too high under the conditions at hand.

As for this past storm, I picked up 4 bags of "tube sand" @ 60 lbs each for the bed of my truck. Since I will be driving here and up north in some (somewhat) remote locations for ice fishing, I like to stack the deck a little more in my favor.

Of course nothing beats an informed and intelligent mind for dealing with winter conditions, but there are some safety issues that you can address that will be most beneficial should you be faced with a problem away from home.
