back river friday night - Striper Talk Striped Bass Fishing, Surfcasting, Boating

i was thinking about going to the back river friday night, would friday night be alright tide wise, http://www.maineharbors.com/ma/junbac03.htm
those are the tides for friday night, should i fish the incoming or outgoing tide, just a reminder that i am a newbie at striper fishing, and does anyone know what time fore river bait and tackle closes during the week

Some say outgoing, some say incoming. Stay and try some of both.

I have never fished there, but it looks like you'll get an opportunity to fish a lot of drop. Most inlets turn quite some time after high or low tide. Letting your offering drift out on the outgoing is a very effective tactic, hence the line-ups at the Rhody Breachways on the dropping tide.

what should i use for bait?? i have some poppers and white bucktails, and some fake shads, just try a little of everything im guessing?? or shouldi just pick up some eels or some frozen mackeral

bring some clams and herring. i have only caught on clams this year but they have been hitting herring. i just havent hooked up . the incoming is when i have the most luck. i believe fore river bait and tackle closes at 6pm but could be later.

Fish 2 hrs before high and 2 hrs after. bring 2 rods if you have them. Chunk some kind of dead bait and get some Storm wildeye plastic shad (they are pre-rigged w/ leadhead and hook) and cast that around while your bait is wet.

And you can pick up some fidder crabs there. You can see a lot of discarded shells ont he shore. It's a rocky shore. I might hit there this Saturday.

Fore river closes at 6pm...after that is the 15 minute drive to Hull Bait & Tackle that is open until 9 on weeknights and 10 on weekends. If there is no one in the shop just tell them you want to get in at the attached Frosty claw Take Out place.

where do you guys fish the Back River? Webb State Park?

I am new Weymouth, new to the South side of Boston actually. And ironically, I am buying a house that is basically in the Back River. Off Idlewell off Comercial Street.

I will be in to see Rick at Fore River for bait and advice but love this board and know there is good advice to be had.

is this the place with a gate and You walk out to the left and its a point and on the other side it drops off and there is an island across from it.

If you are fishing Webb state park, try fishing on the right side 1st up by the point there are alot of bolders there and a bunch of river rock and shell beds that drop right into the channel. If you don't do any good there keep walking and casting you can fish all along the whole park. If you get a chance before then go look at it at low tide so you can see the structure I am talking about.

Notaro, try pluggin with poppers 1st if that doesn't work then try shads or some type of soft plastic. If not successful the bass are eating alot of herring and mackerel right now so that is what I would use for bait. It can be a tough place to fish on the round end of that area with bait as you can snag alot. There are alot of big boulders right there and I would be chuggin a big popper over them rocks!!!

yes, i saw a lot of those boulders before. i fished there. any kind of poppers i can use like orange bluefish bomb, windcheater in mack color, and 3 oz kastmaster w/ a green tube, right? alright, what is ur method of using a mackerel? some people say to fillet a piece or chunk it. i tried chunking it, but it doesnt get me the distance i need to reach. thanks, fisherwoman.

On the way home from ForeRiverTackle I saw about 6 people on the Weymouth side of Stodders it was all I could do just to keep driving and come home.

Ah well. Saturday is almost here.

Rick just got in a boatload of clams. I will have to stop by tomorrow and bait up on my way home.

Saturday weather looks to be starting out good so I am thinking of hitting weymouth river shores (stodders, webb) for the early incoming and outgoing tide, break for lunch with wife and kids during the low and then try closer to home on the northR or herringB for the evening tide.

I picked up a pound of fresh clams this AM and will grab some frozen herring or mack to go with the macks I already have in the freezer at home.

Any suggestions for which lures to throw in between bait casts?
I would like to keep a smaller box of hooks and select lures in the truck at all times. Right now I have a pile of virgin lures

that I have picked up over the months and don't really know what is prime/good/bad/worthless.

Please be specific as I have already dumped too much cash on stuff I thought looked good but has yet to bring in even some seamoss!!

My first ever striper was caught Tuesday using a slice of frozen mack - 3/8 - 1/2 inch thick and a circle hook tied on the line. No weights, swivels, clips, or other hardware. Even with the crosswind I was able to get about 30-40 yards. Throwing with the wind later more than doubled that.

The fresh mack lost about half it's casting weight after the second toss due to the guts falling off. The frozen kept together longer and seemed to suspend in the water more. It also got more hits than the fresh.

I did find that the fish swallowed the circle hook and with the curve removal was not possible. I hope it comes out OK in the end. -- yeowch!!

I am curious as to how fast a hook breaks down when iimbeded in a fish.

I am by no means an expert. We shall see what Saturday brings.
