For anyone who may be interested in attending....

"Cape Cod National Seashore Superintendent George Price announced that on Thursday, May 26 the seashore will hold a public meeting to kick off a planning process for shorebird management. The meeting will be held from 5:30 to 7:00 PM at the Salt Pond Visitor Center, 50 Nauset Road at Route 6, Eastham. The public is invited to attend and make comments to inform the development of a comprehensive shorebird management plan/environmental assessment that will protect rare and threatened shorebirds while accommodating recreational use."

I'd like to see a little more conversation about "accommodating recreational use."

This is from Peter Murray MBBA Race Point Beach Rep.

It looks good right now for a SCV area for Memorial Day weekend, maybe even two, there are around 46 nesting pairs of plovers on the National Seashore and 24 nests (so far) but none scheduled to hatch until after the holiday. Of course there is a nest right by the north side access trail, so enjoy it while you can. Some nests were washed over in the last (storm) high tides, so expect them to attempt to re-nest. Don't shoot the messenger!

Plover are a concerned specie-not endangered.

I truly wish I could get down there for this meeting. If My wife drops the baby before then I will be in Mashpee to work that night anyhow maybe i can parlay that into a visit to Eastham. All depends on the timing of the work I have to get done in Mashpee.

The new wordage is threatened. The former wordage was concerned specie.
I guess using the word threatened makes it more urgent to destroy anything in the path of the plover.

In the past concerned was used because the specie was increasing.

Looks like the park is a plover farm at the expense of any other specie

I'll be there...Last year it was very interesting.All kinds of people spoke during the open mike period.They ranged from grade school kids[7-8 yr olds] to Sierra Club,IFAW,hunters,and the elderly.Ironically the most silent group[pubilcally saying they represented the group] was the Mass Audobon.Not one of the directors[Wellfleet] or higher ups said one word.When there's any sort of meeting about ORV usage they're all there whining and spouting.

Mike, thanks for the heads up. The quote that I originally posted was directly from the CCNSS website. Also, from reading the Cape Cod Times article, I'm not 100% sure that there is no public comment at this meeting. However, the Cape Cod Times article does say that the meeting is not about ORV access which is under a "separate agreement." I've got a call in to the CCNSS folks and I'm going to try to get clarification because you are correct in that the CCNSS and Cape Cod Times have characterized this meeting very differently.

I'll let everyone know what I find out.

It's not about access DIRECTLY but.....

My thoughts are that the plovers are in more danger from predators than people responsibly using/driving the beach. They would probably be much better off with people around to try and chase off the predators. There are many ways to keep the nesting and fledging areas safe from people use without closing the entire beach, but keeping safe from natural predators probably takes a human presence.

I was planning on buying a seasonal sticker this weekend. They closed the entire north side the day before and Rangers said they'd be closing the rest within a couple days.

Going to wait and see when the beaches re-open to decide if it's even worth it to get a sticker.

Everything is closed except for the access road to High Head. So much for managing for BOTH birds and human access. It's all about the birds now. And with their success means more nests which means more closures.

But as the Ranger said to me as she drove up and down the beach on her ATV, "you can always walk." I don't think she picked up on the irony of her words.

That's right in line with when they kicked us off the beach yesterday to close the rest of the beach.

When we asked the Ranger "So, what's the point in buying a sticker if the beaches are completely closed?" To which he smugly replied, "That's what the parking lots are for." and drove right off.

Most of the Rangers are glorified security guards with way too much power. It's a summer job for them so, with the beaches closed, it's a piece of cake.

Wait till next year.If you think it's bad now it's going to get worse.The new buzzword is STAGING.It is going to be implemented for the southern migration in the later summer into fall.The nesting season the buzzword is TAKE.

Hey JohnnyD, guess what? Just in time for the July 4th vacation weekend, the Park Service has closed the entire Head of the Meadow parking lot to "protect a pair of freshly hatched chicks." So now, you don't even have the parking lot!
