As a doctor-ordered vegetarian for 9 years (who eats fish against doc's orders), most "man-made" proteins are inferior to good ol' beef and chicken. What I don't get with the whole plover thing is this.... Plovers are stupid - plain and simple. They nest in areas poorly protected from predators, highly vulnerable to wash out from storms, are extremely territorial and will refuse to nest in close proximity to another nest and are extremely fragile. Quite frankly, they are weak, stupid and kind of deserve to go the way of the dodo.
By putting enclosures up around the nests, the environmentalists are further encouraging this terrible nesting behavior, while also creating a landmark for crows and other predators to target for an easy meal. There is no evolutionary training to get the birds further into the dunes where they'll be better protected because humans minimize the threat.
