NIB Gibbs

Hey Guys, thought I'd post something I thought was pretty cool, one of the Guys I work with (Stan D)grew up on the Cape.He use to hang out with one of Stan Gibbs's son's.Well the story goes like this,Stan use to cut Stan Gibbs lawn and after a weeks worth of lawn cutting he would ask Stan for payment, well Stan G asked if he could pay in plugs?
Well Stan accepted even thou he wasn't a fishermen,he saved them and never used them.He brought them into work last week and showed me and told the story.
Over all they are in great shape and never seen water.

I didn't see any red, white and blue ones.....This Guy has got to be in his fifty's,so I would guess these plugs where made earlier than the 70's.
I'll give him a call on Monday and get the time line.

It was pretty neat to see them old plugs in there original box's,to see something that old and never used...Just awesome

Pete, I'll post a better close up of the 2nd plug today. It looks to be pretty old.

My thought as well ...conn yankee...before it got repainted...those red swirl atoms were from the early 50's...they came with alburn hooks on them before mustad bought them out in 52.Those atoms should have come in a very dark purple box...

BOAT fish do count.

Fishing them is fine...problem comes if they have brass wire...it gets old and brittle which can snap, away goes the fish...later ones had stainless...I've seen fish bigger then 36" come clear out of the water when going for a amber reverse.

BOAT fish do count.

Fish one of those red swirls when the squid are around. Don't worry too much about the wire . My 2nd fish over 50 came on one Bob gave me when I was a kid. 51lb 3oz. 8th fish that night ove 25 and used it for a couple more yrs till hooks got twisted by a 27lber tryin to snag it in the rocks to get off. i've been usin them since the 60's an never had a wire break yet. Plenty of twisted hooks but no broken wires. Still have my Scheafer award an pin for it.Ron

WOW!!! Great story from the past.

I think that at some point in time all of us old guys should compile some kind of a electronic memory thread.
